Gave notice to the Collector of Customs of the abandonment of the ship, . Uy the Collector: Tho owner was in Wellington wljcn licit. 1 could have shipped another hand if X Ukod. i. think the ship was fully manned with two.

hands. I do not think if I had one more hand on board I could have kept her afloat until tide tlm?, so as to get into the river. Saw other vessels in company outside. Two of those vessels got in. They were towed in. Could not make signals to the steamer to tow mo in, as I had no signals on board. The signals at the flagstaff at the Pilot Station wore distinctly to be seen. If I had signals I would not have made signals of distress. It never occuned to-me until Friday morning that the sh'p was in such a leaky condition. I have heard that the ship is 20 years old. She has been known os the Mary Jane, and the W. S. Munday of Westport. She was built at Manawatu. Dominique Patrick, sworn, deposed: I am acting male of tlie Muidon City. I remember coming off the Wanganui bar on Sunday, the 14th. At about 7 p.m U commenced to blow from the west. W© stood in to the bar, put her about, and she missed stays. We then stood out again. At night the wind came strong from the south-west, and we stood away for KapUi. The' sea being too high we hove the ship to. About th's time wo were pumping about ton minutes or a quarter of an hour each hour. On Monday wo kept her away for Wanganui, the wind being light. The water (lid not seem to increase. On Wednesday: we anchored off the bar. While-at anchor the p.s.' Wallace passed out. Wo cooeyed to take us in tow, but sho took no notice. On Thursday morning we lifted anchor and tried to get in, but did not succeed, as the wind was too light. About seven o'clock on Thursday evening we dropped anchor about three miles off the bar. After anchoring. I wont to the pump to pump her out, and found it did not suck. I then asked the master, to have a look, and he reported that the water was nx> to the level of the cabin floor, and increasing.* This would be about 10 o’clock, at which time the .steamer Go-Ahead passed out. We called to the captain that wo could not keep the vessel afloat, as sho was leaking. We then got under way for the purpose of getting Into the river if possible ;if not, to beach her. About 3 a.m. on Friday we boacbod her. and about 5 left her in the dingy. By the Collector: I have been in larger vessels with only two hands. I think two hands were sufficient on board the Maiden City. Wo had no signals. It never occurred to me before 30 o’clock on Thursday that the vessel was in such a bad state. The master and myself were sailing her on third shares. This concluded the iuqulry, the evidence of which has been submitted to the Marino Board at Wellington for their decision.
