Stormblrd, Jane Douglas, Kiwi, and Hineraoa : ship!—Caltloch and Plelone : barques—Chaudlere, Chasca, Whittington, Firth of Forth, and Eltenboth; brigantines—Endeavor and Sarah Pile. • The Union Company’s steamer Taranaki, from the Sonth, arrived in harbor at 3 o’clock yesterday morn-* ing. She left Port Chalmers at 1.80 p.m. on Wednesday, and arrived at Lyttelten at 7.15 next morning; tniled again for Wellington at 3.43 p.m., and arrived as above. From Dunedin to Lyttelton she experienced light northerly winch, with thick weather; thence to arrival hero fresh northerly winds, with smooth soa. She left again for the North yesterday evening. The s.s. Kiwi arrived from Napier at 11 o’clock yesday. She left on Tuesday at 1 p.m., with a strong* southerly wind ap to Cwtleprint, which was reached at 2 p.m. on Thursday; landed one boat load of cargo, but had to leave owing to the heavy sea which was setting* In. Fine weather was experienced until arrival. Thep.s. Msnawafcnrfiora Wanganui, arrived at the wharf at 7 e 50 yesterday morning. She loft at 5 p.m. on Thursday, and experienced fine weather along the coast.
The New Zealand Company's sliip Duke of Argyle, for Londen, cleared at Lyttelton yesterday. She takes a sorgo valued at £03.000. The barque Whittington hauled in to- the wharf yesterday afternoon to dljchaiyo the remaining portion of hoc cargo. No moro striking proof conld have been given to tho Hon. J. Mscandrcv (says the Dunedin Morning Herald of 20th July), who visited tho Port yesterday ai route for Wellington, of tho absolute necessity of additional shlpplng-accommoiation than tho crowded condition of our wharves. Taking tho Railway Pier first—on the right-hand side was- the ship William Davie, from London, discharging general cargo;barquo Celestial Queen, putting out coal; and the steamer Tararns, discharging general cargo from Melbourne and Hobarton, with the Prince Rupert alongside. On the left-hand side was the steamer Rotorua, outwardbound to Sydney and coast ports; next qamo tho barque Aline, discharging cargo from Glasgow ; outside her was the steamer Hinemoa, backed by tho steamers Hawea and Beautiful Star; and ahead of this cluster was tho barque Bast Lothian, from Newcastle. At the New Pier was tho barquo Island City, from Newcastle; barquo Q. M. Tiftkcr, from New York ; barque Boldoa, from London ; ship Margaret Galbraith, loading for London ; barque Renfrewshire, from Port Pirle bound to London, put In in distress, and about to discharge cargo, while outside of her aga'n was tho ship Otago, loading for London. Tho brig Moa was at the Cross Wharf, and the schooners Jane Anderson, Jessie Nlccol, and Friendship were lying at the Old Pier.
The steamer Manawatu, for Wanganui, is advertised to sail on Sunday.
The Kiwi leaves to-day for Napier. The schooners Enterprise ami Aurora both got under way yesterday afternoon. * The former had nbopt Avcmlimtea’ start, and both clapped on all sail for a race. There was only a light breeze blowing from the north. When off Evans Bay. to try and get away, the Enterprise hoisted her gafftopsail. The Aurora, however, crept up steadily in her wake, and was lost sight of first, The schooner J. G. Coleaon, which has been laid up for some time (says the Christchurch Press of July 26), has been purchased by Messrs. Thomas Scotland Co., of WMllngton, to which port sho -will proceed after being repaired. A notice to mariners, published by the South Australian Government on r-th June, states that a rovolklng light of tho third order, showing bright llaflfffcg everr ton seconds, will be exhibited on the Ist of October. 1873, from a lighthouse erected on Penguin Island, at tho north end of Xlivoll Bay. In clear weather tho light will ho visible* at a distance of twelve miles. Owing to unforeseen difficulties tho exhibition of the Althorpo Island light has been postponed until further notice.
