Armstrong, an experiment in hydrodynamics was recently made at the Queen’s Dock, Stobcross, near Glasgow, The object was to ascertain whether a jet- of water striking a face of boulder clay with great force could undermine the bank and cause it to fall. A pressure water equal to 7001 b. on the square inch was directed upon the bank for twelve minutes, at the end of which time it was found that the impact of water had left but a faint trace on the bank, and that the experiment was a failure.
