CARTERTON.

(i'licai OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) July 24. For some reason, which I have not yet heard explained, we are up to the present time mimts a justice •of the peace* whilst the town* ships, on either side of us have each several, and whilst we read in almost every Gazette published of |some new appointment.. I have looked in vain for a local appointment. The inconvenience arising from, this is known to most here, but I may instance that if an individual who does not happen to rank as a settler, wishes to purchase ammunition, he must either go to , Greytown or Masterton (five and eleven miles distance respectively) to get himself recommended. If the Road Board has a return to make, the Chairman has the same difficulty in getting it “declared and subscribed ” before a J.P. This will in a great measure account for the delays which frequently accrue. If some unfortunate bacchanal happens to get “ run in” for a night, he mast either be suffered to go at large, or the Government must pay 7s. fid. coach fare to get him fined 55., &o. This is a matter that certainly wants attention. The desirability of widening our streets is daily becoming more apparent, but up to the present time no action has been taken towards getting the work done. The whole of the streets at present under the ’ Boarcl are of an uniform width of 33ft., and most of them have a drain sft. or 6ft. wide taken out of that. Mr. Conolly has disposed of his 60 acres of land—originally soldier’s scrip—with dwellinghouse thereon, for £I7OO. The distance to this land by road is something over a mile. A sharp shock of,earthquake vyas felt a little before 12 o’clock on Saturday night last.
