(PER PRESS AGENCY.) ' ’ Ahauka, Thursday. The first pile of the Little Grey Junction bridge was driven homo yesterday amidst great rejoicing. The Ahaura bridge is to be commenced in six weeks.. They are the two most important public works yet undertaken in the Grey Valley District'. Auckland, Thursday. The conference of school committees has proposed to petition the Assembly to define the powers and privileges of committees. A complaint is made that the Education Act provides that, committees shall be consulted in the appointments of teachers, and this has not been done by the Education Board. Mr. James Dilworth declines to take a seat in the Legislative Council owing to ill health. Napibb, Thursday. The volunteer demonstration took place today.- A halt'holiday was proclaimed, and all places of business were There was competition between the various squads for prizes, and afterwards a competition between the Napier'and Spit brigades. The weather was very wet, and marred the affair a good deal; still, there were largo numbers of spectators. In the evening there was a torchlight procession and fireworks, the volunteers and the band taking part; and the weather having cleared up this was a great success. A dinner takes' place in the Theatre Iloyal to-night. New Plymouth, Thursday. Mr. Thomas Bay ley has sold his farm at White Cliffs, consisting of 3000 acres, at £.7 10s. per acre, the purchase money being £22,500. . , ■ Great satisfaction is expressed at the Government consenting to push.on the railway to Stratford quickly. / , Dunedin, Thursday.

The opera “ Maritana”-was performed at the Queen’s Theatre last night by a company of amateurs, under Signor Morley. The audience was one of the largest ever seen here, and the Press speaks highly of the performance.
. The nominations for Roslyn took place today. Messrs. Driver and’ Ross were the only candidates proposed. The show of hands was largely in favor of Mr. Driver. Mr. Watt, R.M., has compiled a roster of justices of the peace to take business in the Police Court for the next three months.
