ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH.

Plana for the new church to be erected by J3t. Andrew’s congregation have been prepared by Mr, Toxward, and tenders for the erection of the building invited. The site is in Boul-ton-atreet, and as the sides of the church will ba hidden by other buildings they will be almost without, ornament. The front elevation promises to have an imposing appearance, ami the design seems to be well harmonised. There are four Corinthian columns, resting* on pedestals, and surmounted by a pediment, the windows being surmounted by smaller pediments and entablatures. The tower is in unison with * the general design, and the style'is strictly classic* Prom the basement to the top of the tower ia about 90ft; the height of the roof of the building is 46ft.; the church.is 100 ft. long by 46ft, wide, and 450 people will be comfortably seated in it. . The main entrance opens into a vestibule, from which stairs lead • to the galleries and doors open into the aisles. The galleries, which are on three sides, are ts be enclosed with an iron railing. Thera will also be two stairs leading to the galleries from, the rear of the church, so that there will be ample means of access to them. A aeparate gallery, 9ffc. from the floor, will be provided for the choir; and as this will be placed in a circular recess, with an arched roof, the singing should ha well thrown forward into the building. Xu front of the choir’s gallery will be tbe pulpit, but the plans for this and the seats, &c., have not yet been prepared, as-it has not been decided whether the seats should be in a semicircle or placed in straight* rows across the church.. The building will be

be of wood, the interior being plastered with plaster of Paris and Keen cement. Up to a height; of 4ft. the walls will ibe wainscoted with kauri panels and cedar ornaments and mouldings. The ceiling, wlll be divided into groins, and will be traversed with richly ornamented beams, while round the building there will be an. ornamental cornice and entablatures, Corinthian columns, of which there are twelve, will greatly set off the interior. Special arrangements will be made for securing good ventilation, while equal care will be tajmn to prevent draught - and to render the church thoroughly comfortable. At the rear of the building there is a large room, 30 x 20, for a vestryj and it ia likely that this will be divided into two smaller rooms, and a building to be to be used as a Sunday-school will be erected.
