The following is a list of the ships arrived at this port during the month:—From London: The Craigmullen, 761 tons, on 22nd Juno; Pleione, 1100 tons, 3rd July; Firth of Forth, 830 tons, 4th July; Caltlqch, 1204 tons, 12th July; The Remington, 000 tons, from Cardiff, 20th Juno; The Elizabeth, from Glasgow, • bound to Wanganui, oth July. The Cbasca and Chaudierc are loading for London, to sail at the end of July. The following vessels are expected from London: The Craigie Lee; Ab?ona, 079 tons, sailed Ist May; Medea, 1005 tons, sailed 30th April; Orari. sailed'3lst May. The Zealand!*, Rakala, and Wairoa were loading for this port. „ . Tho following had sailed from New York for Wei- - llngton:—G. M. Tac'<er, 19th February; Star, l«ih February; Mercury, 20th March; Alma, 3rd April; and the Southraiuster, 124 S tons, and Olernsten, 500 tons, were loading. The St. Loulfl,-with brandies and French produce, had sailed from Bordeaux, Ratos of freight to I.ondon.—Grease wool, gd per lb; washed do, 2d per lb ; undamped, §d extra ;„ tall »w, in cases, 60s ; In casks, 655; and hides, 55s per ton. Bank Rates.—Exchange for bills on London—On ‘demand, 2 percent premium ; at 30 days, 1J per cent do ; at 60 days, 1 per cent do ; at 00 days, i per cent do. The banka’ bnying rates are —For bills at 90 days, 1 discount: CO days, £ discount; 30 days, par. Discount on local bills, underOS days, 8 per cent; under 125 days, 0 per cent; over 125 days, 10 per cent. Interest allowed on deposits lodged for 3 months, 45 psr cent; forO months, 5 per cent; for 12 months, b£ Pt Tho Suez mail was delivered in Wellington on the 2Sth June. The San Francisco mail was delivered on the Bth
July. Importers do not look for much activity in trade at this season, and the transactions under notice have been of a very restricted character, but we have good reason to'think that the trade of the past month will bear favorable comparison pdth the corresponding period of last year. Buyers, In spite of low price*, have been indisposed to operate beyond the supply of immediate requirements, and there has been a total absence of speculative purchases. Stocks continue heavy, and must tend to keep down quotations * for some time to come. Generally speaking trade miy be considered healthy, and .payments are moderately well met. We have to report one suspension in the colonial trade—Messrs. Beck and Tonks—but we understand that-the estate, which has been assigned to Messrs. Thomas and F. A. Krull, shows a large surplu* f _the liabilities being £*20,000; the assets, £23,000; and private property, £6OOO. The suspension is due to o. partnership disagreement. Ale and Porter (duty paid, bottled Is 3d per gallon, bulk Is per gallon)—A fair amount of business has been done during the month In bottled ales and stouts, the market being fairly supplied’ with the favorite brands, which are quoted at 10s 9d to lls per dozen. Bulk ale is in moderate demand at £9 to £9 10s per hhd for McEwen's; but the quality of the colonial brew is now sufficient to render the English beer of little consumption in this market.
Bags and Woolpacks(duty, 10 per cent).— Cornsacks are In fair supply at 10s 3d to 10s Od per dozen. A parcel of Calcut a sacks was placed at 10s 3d. Woolpacks being out o! season meet with no inquiry at 3s 6d for full-sized packs. Candles (duty, 1 per lb).—Sperm candles meet with Improved sale, and are quoted at 9jd to 9]d per ib for foreign, and lOjd for Belmont sperm. The demand for the local manufacture, by Messrs Kitchen and Sons, continues good at their former quotations. Cement (duty. Is per barrel).—Full stocks ef cement have been received by recent English ships, and prices are unimproved. We quote best brands at 17s 6d to 18s per barrel. J Coffee (duty, 3d per lb). —Usual trade demand at Is 4d to Is 5d for plantation; stocks being light. Chicory (duty. 3d per Ib).—There Is. little demand for foreign chicory at Od fo C)d per .lb, colonial growth being preferred by the trade. Confectionery (duty, 2d per lb).—English confectionery is in fair supply, with only modcralo sale at lOjd to 10j<1 per lb. Flour (duty, 20s per ton).—Stocks of Adelaide flour are veiylow, hut owing to the low figure at - which colonial flour is brought into the market the price remains unaltered at £l7 per ton, with only a moderate trade demand. Fruits (duty, Id per lb).—Currants are in full stock at 4jd to 4} per lb -, Elemo raisins dull at 4Jd to 4ijd ; muscatels. Is 2d to Is 4d for exceptionally fine fruit; sultanas in little inquiry atOid to 7d ; new figs, 7d to 7ld ; dried apples, 6J per lb. Wo report only a moderate trade doing in dried fruits. Hops (duty, 3d per lb).—There are no English bops In imi ortrrs' bands. Nelson hops are quoted at 1s to (duty, 3s fid per bushel).—No English malt In stock; colonial malt Is quoted at 6s 6d to 7s per bushel, with fair inquiry. Metals (duty, 10 per cent; corrugated Iron and fencing wire, 20s.per ton).—Corrugated iron Is In full supply, and sales of best brands have been made at £25 Iss t0.£26 10a per ton for ordinary lengths., Fencing wire meets with only moderate demand at £l4 to £l6 per ton for Nos. 6,7, and Bln trade parcels. Sheet zinc is In demand at £34 per ton ; sheet lead, £26 to £27 per ton. Oils(d uty, C<l per gallon).—Kerosene Is cc mparall vely neglected for the present, owing to the recent scare; but qualities that arc up to the required test point are worth 2s to 2a 2d per gallon; and Downer’s, with a tost of 1&0 degrees, is quoted at 3s per gallon. Faint : oils in heavy stock at 4s for raw to 4s 3d for boiled linseed, in drums. Turpentine, dull at 3s 9(1 to 4s. Cistcr, 5s to 5s Od. - Colza scarce, and worth 6s Od per gallon. - Oilmen's Stores (duty, lOper cent.).—Usual business done in .oilmen’s, stores, at prices that yield ; a moderate profit to Importers. Rico (duty-Jd per In).—Wo report no alteration In value. Spirits , (duty, 12s per gallon).—There has been no alteration In quotations for spirts of any description since,our last report, the business dope being chiefly limited to the customary supply of the retail trade. Hennessy’s brandy, in case, is firm at 3ls Ori; Martell'a do, 32s Gd; bulk do, 10s to 10s 3d porga'lon, for quart- rs. Other brands are coming more into favor than formerly, and are moving off at last month’s quotations. Rum is in full stock at 3s 10a to 4s for White’s and Lemon Hart a. Genova null at ISs'to 16s per case, according to contents. Whisky Un Sugar ed (duty. Id per lb).—Sydney Beflnery Company’s sugars are in moderate supply, with the usual trade deman !, prices being the same as last kobm s rates. I.C . £44 to £44 10s; No. 2 AT., £45 10s to £46 per ton, duty paid; English crushed loaf is in demand at £52 to £54 per ton. , . „ „ a Tea (duty. 6d per lb).—The new seasons teas are coming forward, and are .generally thought to be of better quality this year. COLONIAL PRODUCE. Butter,—Keg butter, in spite of the high price of fresh, has f--nnd little improvement during the month, and cannot bo quoted higher than 9d to per lb for first-class cure, with little .inquiry except for local wants. . . , „ Cheese —Canterbury cbeese has been in full supply at 7d to 8d per lb. - Bacon and Hams.—New cure has come forward in good condition from the South, and moves off steadily atßjd.to9Jperlb. Flour.—The market for Southern flour has continued to show signs of weakness during the month, and stocks are increased to a cong'dcrable amount; best brands of Oaraaru and Canterbury flour cannot bo quoted higher than £lllos to £l2 per ton, for sacks, in bakers’ lobs.
Grain.—Tho stock of oats in importers’ hands has become low, and the price has gone up to 4s 6d to 4s 8d per bushel; chicken wheat Is worth 4s 3d ; maize, low stocks at per bushel: bran, scarce, and worth Is 6d per bushel; pollard, £7 to £8 per ton. Potatoes.—Potatoes are in moderate supply at 80s per ton. • Timber.—Sawn limber continues in good demand at last month's rates. - Mr. George Thomas reports:—Flour, Adelaide, £l7 10s to £18; Colonial, £l2: pollard. £7 10s; bran.
