, THE ACCIDENT TO THE S.S. WANAI&. The s.s. Wanaka, which left here on TuMt&y at 1.15 p.m. with the San Francisco mall, bound tofPort Chalmers, returned to port again at 13.45 a.m.Testerday in tow of the s.s. JRlngarooma. hating swept all the blades off her propeller. The Wanaka goribout 100 miles south of the port, steaming against V; very heavy head sea, when about 3 a.m. on Wednesday, the steamer pitching heavily, a aoa broke .oyp£ her and stripped all the blades off her propeller. , As tho wind at the time ; was southerly nothing retrained to be done but set the canvas and run back/vihich was done at once. About 0.30 pm. on Wednesday, when the Wanaka was some 10 miles to the of Akaroa; the s.s. Ringarooma sighted her, ofld in answer to her signals bore down on her, and Anally took her in tow, the two steamers arriving: in harbor at 12.45 a.m. yesterday. The mails ana passengers for tho South were transhipped from the Wanaka to the lUng-rooma, and that steamer start for Port Chalmers at 3 a.m. The Wanaka has not received any further injury than that to h6r propeller. The blades screw into tho boss of the. propeller, so that the steamer will bo enabled tb proceed South again without having to remain here any length of time. There is oae spare blade on board, and another will be sent up for her la the Taranaki. The Wanaka has been brought in to the Screw-pile Jetty, where her stern will be raised sufficiently to allow of the blades being screwed into the propeller, ami she will then go on to Port Chalmers. In recognition of Captain McGlUivray's zeal to secure the safety of tho vessel and the well-being of his passengers under the circumstances, the following .djestlmonial, signed by the passengers, has been presented to him “To Csptaia McGiUivray, s.s. Wakaka. "July 10,1878. “Sir, —We. tho undersigned saloon passengers, desire to express our sympathy with you under the trying circumstances in which you have bfeo placed by the unfortunate accident (which in our opinion no human foresight could have prevented), and bj /which your screw propeller was rendered useless, and to bear our testimony to the zeal and earnestness with you have endeavored to conserve the interests of your employers, and our. thankfulness for the’ care ana anxiety you have evinced for the safety and comfort. of your passengers.
