She reports leaving Nelson at 4p.m. on Tuesday, and arrived at Picton half an-hour after midnight, and experienced fine weathe** with strong S.E. breeze. From Mr. Fltzer, £hfof officer* we learn that the schooner Nelson has srxived safely at Picton from Napier. It will be remembered that she had to put back on three occasions through stress of weather. The steamer Taupo left Port Chalmers on Monday at 3 p m,, and arrived at Lyttelton at 10 o’clock the next morning, after experiencing strong northerly 'winds; she left Lyttelton again at 6 p.m., and came into port at nine yesterday morning. We are pVeased Vo state that she was passed in Blind Bay by the so, ‘Murray on Saturday afternoon, and reports all WRU.—Afifson Colonist, July*9. THE BARQUE ELIZABETH. The barque E which wo reported in yesterday's Issue as having arrived, was towed to the wharf yesterd y forenoon by the steamer Moa, Her master. Captain Sou tar, denies almost in toto the statement as to Tils vessel be ng unaeaworthy and arriving in a sinking condition. We have since received the following additional particulars regarding his vessel. She is a ha qua of 334 tons register, built at Prince Edwa d Island, British North America, in 1874, and is not yet four years old. She-is-classed A 1 American Lloyds for seven years, and has yet three more years to run on her first classification. Like most Araercan vessels she is built of pine, and is thoroughly fit to carry carg < of any description. Before leaving she was surveyed by the Underwriters’ Association of Glasgow, who gave a certificate that the - vessel was thoroughly seaworthy, that her cargo was also safely stowed and sufficiently dunnaged. 'The certl-' ficate Is signed by Messrs. J. Wilkie and T. W. True, nautical surveyors. Glasgow. She carries the usual crew.for a vessel of her size, viz, ten hands all told. She is o*ned by Mr. O. R, Strickland, of London, and not by a Lyttelton firm. The vessel was quite suited to carry a dead-weight cargo, which was put on board 1 by the express approval of the Glasgow underwriters, and surveyors. She Is drawing 13ft. 61n., and is fuUy a foot und;r PlimsoU's mark. In fact the vessel showed raor* side than the ship Pleione when she arrived. After she had been out seven weeks slie encountered a severe gale,, during which a heavy sea came on bo-rd and washed the helmsman trom his post. Th© ship then for a minute took charge, and another sea struck her violently on the quarter and strained her rudder-post, which caused her to make a btfe water, but nothing of any Importance. It must, however, be borne In mind that &Q the ships that have arrive ! lately from Homo have met with very severe weather, and the Elizabeth Is only a small vessel, so that it could not be expected that there would be the same comfort on board her in stormy weather os on a vessel twice herslzo. The water could always be kept under with a few minutes’pumping every hour. The crew on several occasions requested Capt’dn Soutar to put Into Rio, but os he saw there was not the slightest necessity for so doing ho determined not to alter the ship’s course. The crew next wanted to be landed at Hobarton, but the captain still refused D’Urvlllo Island was sighted last Sunday, when Captain Soutar intended heading for Kapltf, but as tiro crew tefnsed to go there, and insisted that tho vessel should be hcaaed for Wellington, the master was. compelled to do as they wished, and she arrived as stated before. Immediately on her arrival the capt tin came on shore to see Captain Rose, the agent ho e for the New Zealand Shipping Company, for the purpose of expediting Ills business. After consultation with Captain Rose. Captain Soutar found that he had arrived at the proper port, because If ho ?iad proceeded to Wanganui, as previously intended. he would have received orders to return to Wellington, The statement regarding the master - coming ashore and leaving the crow to keep the ship afloat U altogether false. He simply came on shore, as we said above, to expedite matters regarding his veis l. As to the ship being in a sinking stats, it Is of course absurd, as her arrival at the wharf yesterday shows. Hod she be-n in such a state it Is hardly likely that the crew would have turned in quietly to si ep. ' ■ ** - •••
