HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held at 1 p.m., yesterday. Present— Messrs.; Mason (Chairman), .Speedy, Dick, Monaghan, Morgan, Smith, Taylor, Lancaster, Chew, arid Taylor. - PUBLIC MARKET. , The Chairman stated that ■ the deputation had waited.on the Government, with regard to the procuring of a site for a public market. The Government recognised the desirability of a public market being established, and stated that, an area would be reserved for the purpose beyond the land at present being reclaimed—namely, beyond the baths," when further reclamation was carried out as intended. -The Government would like tho Council to express some opinion as to what area should be reserved for a public market. ' DOC TAX. • ‘ ’ The CHAIRMAN said the Government had been comihrinicated with on the subject of the collection of the dog tax in the Hutt County. A reply , had been received from the Colonial Secretary, stating that the Government, on account of the inconvenience .arising, had declined several applications from other parts of .the colony for having the dog tax collected by the police. ; If, however, the Council named certain persons whoso duty It would be to collect this tax, the Government would recommend the Governor to appoint them as registrars. Perhaps between the present and next meeting the Council would coririder what names should be-recomraended to the Govern-i meat. :

KOHAUEANOA QUARRY. . - ; A letter was read from Mr. Charles MoKirdy asking leave to quarry stone on the Nghaurangaroad, for which ,ho was willing to pay a royalty. .. 1 .; On the motion o£ Councillor Taylor, seconded by Councillor Seeedy, it was re-solved,—That-the engineer, Mr. Chow, aud the mover, bo appointed to make arrangements with Mr,: McKirdy relative to the quarry on the Ngahoiufanga-'road, "

PEENDEVILL.e’B PROPERTY. , It was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Monaghan, seconded by Councillor Lancaster, —That the disused road abutting on Mr. Prendeville’s property, between sections Nos. 7 and 8, South.Makara, be added to the list of disused roads to be sold. / ACCOUNTS. Several accounts were passed for payment, amounting to £823 10s. 3d. ■ > tendrrs. ■ The following tenders were opened for No. 2 contract, Mungaroa-Waikanae-road:—R. Lyon, £1987 10s!; P. Sculley, £1970 ; J. McColl, £3710 ; \V. Neil aud J. Godair, £1149 10a.; K. Mabey, £2533 155.; Simpson and Freeland, £I7BB 15s. v , | It was resolved that the tender- of Messrs; W. Neil and J. Godair, at £1149 10s., be accepted, provided the sureties wore approved ; failing this, that the next lowest tender be accepted. , '; , ■ WAINUIOMATA. Councillor Dick moved, —That the sum of £IOO be paid to tho Wellington Highway District, to be expended in the ‘Wainuiomata Riding, Hutt Connty. i ■ Councillor Smith seconded the motion. Councillor Morgan moved as an amendment, —That the sum of £IOO be paid to the Wellington District Highway Board at such time as the funds at the disposal .of the . Council will admit, to be expended in such manner as the Board may deem proper. The amendment was not seconded. ■ The original resolution was lost. Ayes: Councillors Dick, Smith, and Monaghan. Noes: Councillors Taylor, Chew, Lancaster, Morgan, Speedy, and Mason. : : NOTICES OP MOTION. - , . Councillor Morgan gave notice of the following motion for next meeting :—That I will ask for the estimated cost of main bridges required on the Upper Huttand Waikauae-road, arid the estimated smri required for opening the said road for through traffic. Also to ask what balance will remain unexpended of the fund appropriated to the construction of the Upper Huttand Waikanae-roadafter payment of present contracts. ’ ■' PUBLIC MARKET. _ On the motion of Councillor Monaghan, it was resolved,—That a committee be appointed to take into consideration the question of area to he applied for. The proceedings then terminated. ■ Tho' committee immediately held a sitting, and agreed to recommend to the Government that a reserve of three acres should be made, adjacent to the Thorudon Baths, for a public market..
