VICTORIAN HUMANE SOCIETY.

On June 20, at the Town Hall, Melbourne, Sir Remond Barry presented the following awards made by the Victorian Humane Society : George Stewart, Sandridge.—-Plunged into the • river from the steamer Penguiu, to the relief of Edward Sheen, who had fallen in while fishing, and was sinking for the third time. He succeeded in bringing him safelyto laud—Bronze medal.

David Hatfield, Richmond.—At Kenney’s Baths, St. Kilda, on the alarm of “ Shark” turned and saw portion of the body of Robert Whitelaw; swain to it, and with some difficulty succeeded in bringing him to the steps—Certificate of society. Richard McAvoy, . -Anderson’s Creek. — .Jumped into the river and caught .Jessie Cameron, close to a large revolving wheel ; succeeded in bringing her to land after sinking twice—Bronze medal.

Charles McCarthy, Sandridge,—Jumped off the railway pier with all his cloches on, and succeeded in rescuing Louisa Hutchinson. The weather was very rough, and the man very much exhausted—Bronze medal. ,

Alfred Nixon, Serpentine.—Plunged into a dam on East Lodden Station, and after re* peatedly diving succeeded’in saving the lives of two boys who were drowning, he himself being but an indifferent swimmer—Bronze medal.

Reuben , John May, Sandhurst.—On two several occasions succeeded in saving the lives of persons who were in danger of being run over by trains—Certificate of society. Herbert Cutbbert Christy, Ballarat.—Sue,* ceeded in saving his little sister from being burnt to death, burning his own hands severely —Certificate of society. Francis Dixon Kite, Glen lanes, N.S.W.— At Sandridge Railway Pier, on a very dark and stormy night, Mr. Kite jumped overboard, and succeeded in saving, two men who had fallen under the pier from the s.s. WhampoaSilver medal.

Karl Killian, of Sandhurst.—-Jumped into a dam to rescue Edmund Henry Thomas, and after two attempts succeeded in bringing him ashore—Bronze medal.

George Bircll,' Sandridge.—Jumped from the railway pier, Sandridge, and supported a woman until assistance was procured—Certificate.

George Bell, s.s. Julia Percy.—Jumped into the River Yarra, and sustained a man, who evidently intended to commit suicide, until a buoy was thrown to them—Bronze medal. . Annie Dean, Maryborough.—Saved her brother from being drowned in a well by placing her feet on one side and resting her shoulders on the other, and supporting him until assistance arrived—Bronze medal.

Hugh Robinson, Somerville.—Saved George Clarke in a deep channel in Western Port Bay by jumping iff after him with all his clothes on and after great difficulty bringing him ashore —Bronze medal.

William Burns, Williamstown.—Jumped from the St. Kilda pier aud saved a boy who had fallen into the water, by supporting him until a rope was thrown to them—Certificate of the society. • *'

■ William George Coleman,Melbourne —Saved the life of Jeannie McWilliams, and attempted to save those of her two sisters, in the River Yarra, by swimming to their assistance and sustaining them as long as his strength would allow—Silver medal.

Richard James Winchester, Mooroopna.— Saved Robert Barnes by diving into the Goulburn River aud-bringing him ashore through a strong current—Bronze medal. Stephen Lordean, Buninyong.—Saved the life of .George Overall by diving into a dam, and after some difficulty bringing him ashore . insensible.—Certificate. Thomas Richard Pearce.—Rescued Miss Eva Carmichael after the wreck of the Loch Ard, and subsequently paid great attention and care in restoring her t 6 animation—Gold medal.
