CARTERTON.

(prom oub own correspondent.) ■The nomination of a warden for No. 2 Ward of the Taratabl-Cartorton Highway Board took place on Monday last, when Mr. C. 11. Lyster-Kay, being the only one nominated, was declared elected.

I am informed that Mr. 0. if. Jury has disposed of a section of totara land at the south end of Carterton at the rate of £2l per acre, and that tho purchaser intends erecting another saw-mill upon it. The Taratahi-Cartorton Highway Board met on Tuesday. The principal business was the letting of the contract for the cutting on Edwards’ rl ill, the contract price being something over £270. This cutting .will he a great boon to persons using this line of road, as at the present time it is as much as a single horse can do to draw an empty, let alone a loaded dray over it. Mr. Chew applied for leave to lay a tramway along the line of road leading to his mill, and his application was granted. The fixing of the site for the principal railway station on the Belvedere-road has apparently enhanced the value of land in that locality considerably. There is an acre of land opposite Mr. Fairbrother’s store which could have been purchased a few months since for £650, and the proprietors would not now take £I2OO. The Wesleyans have purchased a harmonium for the chapel here, and are organising a choir. This is a want that has been long felt, as for some years the congregation has depended upon Mr. Hammond to lead the singing, and the attention he has given is deserving of the highest praise.
