KARORI-MAKARA HIGHWAY BOARD.
- The ordinary meeting of the Board was held on Saturday. Present: Mr.. C; C. Graham (chairman), and Messrs; Page, Cook, Bowler, and Pinnimore. It was decided to pay Mr. Dorsett the Board’s subsidy of £2O on account of filling in .of the roadway opposite the Botanical Garden gate. A deputation waited upon the Board to urge the necessity for taking over the - road through Mitchelltown. It was decided that the road be not taken over for the present, but that the Board contribute a sum of £2O on condition that the settlers contribute a like sum to be expended on repairs. The clerk was instructed to prepare returns* showing the amount of rates to be collected in each ward, and the amount authorised to be spent in each, out of current rates. It was decided that the road to Kilmister’s, in the Tinakori Range, be thrown open, and that notice be given that all gates must be removed within three months from date. Mr. Peter Trotter was appointed ranger to the Board for the district beyond the top of the Makara Hill, with power to impound all horses and cattle straying in the roads, and summons the owners of all such horses and cattle.
■ The following tenders for the deviation of the road across the Kaiwarra stream were opened : —Mr. Osburn, £1953 ; P. Scalley, £3500 ; J. H. Scanlon, £3355 ; J. McLean, £3545 ; Simsou and Finland, £2900. . The Board were of opinion that the work was far beyond their means, and decided not to accept any of the tenders. It was decided to accept Elijah Short’s tender for maintenance of Evans Bay-road for one year for the sum of £6O. A rate of Is. in. the £, as advertised, was struck for the year ending June 30, 1879. Accounts to the amount of £240 6s. 3d. were passed for payment.
