A tolerably severe shock of earthquake was felt here at half-past ten last night. I have not heard of any damage being done by it. Nelson, Sunday afternoon. The Goverment s.s. Hxnemoa left Wellington’at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday for Wakapuaka, having on board the Hon, Mr. Fisher, Post-master-General; the Hon, Mr. Burns, Post-master-General of New South Wales; Colonel Glover, Messrs. Taylor, Shapley, Cooper, Colonel Reader, and others. Dr. Lemon did not come. Wakapuaka was reached at half" past nine o'clock this morning. The’ party landed and visited the Maori pa and inspected the. cable house and telegraph station, Mr. Fisher and Colonel Glover remained at Wakapuaka, and will come overland to‘.Nelson this evening. Colonel Glover took several sketches of the scenery at Wakapuaka.. Very fine weather has been experienced throughout the trip. At an inquest held yesterday on the body of Martin John O’Connell, captain- of the schooner Josephine, who was killed on the railway near Heathcote station on Thursday night, the evidence showed that the deceased was under the influence of liquor, and tried to jump on the train while it was in motion, but probably stumbled over the signal wires, and was dragged some distance by the train. When found he was quite dead. A verdict of accidental death was returned. It ia proposed to establish*** gas company at Ashburton. The Board of Governors of the Canterbury College yesterday evening negatived the proposal to create a scholarship in connection with the Agricultural, College. - They accepted a tender for a new wing for the Canterbury College at a cost of £4078. Dunedin, Saturday. The Times states that the libel case of Haughton v. Reed and Fenwick will not come on at present, as a commission has been issued for the examination of several persons formerly belonging to her Majesty’s ship Euryalus. A settler named Alexander Rintoul, residing at Taieri, was killed yesterday by a fall from a horse. • Captain Sinclair, of the Fire Brigade, was last night presented with an address and a purse of sovereigns, as he ia about leaving the district.
