RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Friday, July 5. (Before J. 0. Crawford, Esq., 8.M.) DRUNKENNESS. An elderly woman was discharged with a caution for being drunk. ALLEGED ASSAULT ON THE 11IOH SEAS. James Baton, master of tho barque Whittington, was charged with assaulting George Anderson, a seaman of tho same vessel. Prom tho evidence of tho complainant, it appeared that on the 4th of May, while at sea, he took some wearing apparel, which was hung on tho rigging into the forecastle. Captain Baton aud the third mate followed him into tho forecastle, and there struck and kicked him. Bor the defence, it was shown that the complainant Was unruly : and disobedient, and that the captain merely pushed him from tho forecastle. The third mate stated that ho had struck, the
man. Sir. Crawford thought that the evidence of the complainant was untrustworthy, and dismissed the case. Sir. Fitzgerald appeared for the complainant, and Sir. Travers, jun., for the defendant. MAKING-USE OP ABUSIVE LANGUAGE. Stephen Morton, boatswain of tiie ship Pieione, was charged with making use of abusive language to Captain Ucnaut. The ease was dismissed. DAMAGING PROPERTY. Alfred and James Harvey, two boys, were charged with damaging property belonging to Alexander Wilson. From the evidence it appeared that the youngsters had broken a notice-board by throwing stones at it. They were each fined Is. and costs. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for the amount claimed, with costs, was given in the following cases :—T. K. Macdonald and Co. v. G. W. Hewitt ; claim, £l7 2s. 3d.—J. Keals v. G. Fitohett ; claim, £3. —Simeon v. Simpson ; claim, £3 15s. Bd.—E, Styles v. Huntley ; claim, £2.
