THE REPAIRS TO THE ALBION’S SHAFT. An admirable example of local enterprise has been afforded during the week at the works of Mr. John Anderson, who has undertaken the repairs of the steamship Albion. It will bo remembered that this steamer mot witli an accident on her way from Wellington to Lyttelton, and that atapointsomelO miles ontside the heads her intermediate shaft broke. It was thought at tho time that the damage could bo repaired within two ot three days, bnt tho extent of the injury had not then become apparent. The enormous size and weight of tho various parts has alone presented very great difficulties, Including their removal from tho vessel, tho loading on to railway trucks, and the carriage to Mr. Anderson* foundry. The shaft for example Is 2lft long, and »ln in diameter, and weighs 1) tons. Tho break In this was a very bad one, necessitating the insertion of a new length of 3ft Oln, by tho process of piecing and welding. Tho main weld presented the most serious ditncruUles, 3lr Anderson’* establishment, complete ns It Is, not having been arranged for tho carrying out of such los-Utlun repairs. All the dUUcuUles however have been successfully surmounted. A forge having been mt apart for the welding, a powerful blast was produced by tho aid of ono of Hoots patent fans, driven by a vertical engine specially fitted up. Tho two parts to be welded were laid together In the fire, aud while one of tho projecting pieces was Hr uh secured, tho other was supported by strong tiio4 i.ig, arjd by ono of the forge cranes. When tho welding hekt-was reached, a powerful ram was brought to boar upon the suspended and free end of the shaft, so as to force tho heated parts together. This was so successfully accomplished that the subsequent minute examination failed to detect the slightest flaw. Following this came tho more tedious operation of straightening the welded shaft, and this lias boon accomplished by successive heatings and the use of heavy hammers. So soon as the “ tracing up" is completed, the shaft will be ready for the •lathe. The work.was commenced on Tuesday morn-

ing, and has since then, proceeded day and night without intermission. At times tbo scene presented in this forging shop has been grand In the extreme, especially during tho night, figures of tho thirty-five workmen ® D .S a ßcd hove been thrown out in-strong relief by the Aid of the fierce fiames from the forgo fires. The welding hammers used weigh 04!bs. each, and these the hammermen appeared to swing with tho utmost possible case. The huge crank shaft, weighing about 24Cwb., Is also bent, and is undergoing a similar process, by being heated atone of the forces, and then slid down on to blocks to -be hammered. It was oidy known on Friday morning that this ponion of the machinery was injured, and the same day the workmen had commenced operations upon It. One of the after shafts also, which connects with tho shaft holding the propeller, has yet to be trued up. This, which weighs one and a half tons, Is twisted like a corkscrew. One of the great central bearings Is snapped In two, and the brass twisted; the coupling bolts of the shafts, two and a half inches In diameter, are snapped liMe so many carrots, and the glands of the stuffing boxen hare also to be replaced. Tho steamer Albion must therefore remain In portly some days to come. —Lyttelton Times, July I.
