DEPUTATION.
A deputation from the Education Board, consisting of the Hon. Mr. Pharazyn, the Hon. Mr, Gisborne, and the Rev. J. Paterson, waited on the Minister for Education (the Hon. Mr. Ballauce) at the Government Buildings, at 11 a.m. yesterday, for the purpose of bringing under the attention of the Government two matters connected with educational institutions in the city. ' The Venerable Archdeacon Stock had also been appointed a member of the deputation to wait on the Government, but the rev. gentleman was not in. attendance. The deputation was most courteously received by the Minister,
The Hon. Mr. Phabazyn informed the Hon. Mr. Ballance that the two subjects to which the deputation desired to draw the attention of the Government were—first, the desirability of having a site set apart on the new reclaimed land for the establishment of a girls’ school at Thorudon ; and, secondly, the advisableness of obtaining titles to reserves already made for school purposes. With regard to the first of these subjects, the Board of Education considered that the time had arrived when it was necessary to establish a girls’ school for the Thorndon end of the city ; and they thought it would be a really good thing if a site of Half an acre in extent on the new reclaimed land could be obtained for the purpose. The Board had already obtained a reserve of half an acre on the reclaimed land for a boys’ school, and they were about to . proceed with the erection of the school. There could bo no doubt that the necessity existed for the establishment of a girls’ school also, and therefore they wished to bring the matter before the Government, while it was yet in their power to grant the necessary reserve.
The Hon. Mr. Ballance evinced considerable interest in the matter brought under notice, and in educational matters generally. He entertained the request, of the deputation very favorably, and said he would bring it before his colleagues, and recommend that a grant of half an acre of the reclaimed land should be made. The Hon. Mr. Gisborne and the Rev. Mr. Paterson also strongly urged the importance of having the city well supplied with educational institutions.
Tho Hon. Mr. Ballance said he fully agreed with those gentlemen ; and as to the site for a girls' school, he would bring the subject before his with the least possible delay, and forward a reply at an early date.
The deputation then brought under the Minister's attention the second subject on which they had sought and obtained an interview, namely, the advisableness of titles being obtained.by the Education Board to reserves that had been already made, viz., the halfacre reterve on the reclaimed land for a boys’ school, and another reserve on the Adelaideroad.
The Hon. Mr. Ballance assured the deputation that this matter would also be attended to directly, and a reply forwarded at an early date. ■
The deputation then expressed their thanks for the courtesy they had received, and the interest which the Minister had evinced in the subjects brought before him, and withdrew.
