Wanganui, and p s Manawatu; barques, Chaudiere Chasca, Craigmullen, Whittington, and New Brunswick ; brigantine. Hannah Broomfield. The topsail schooner Young Dick arrived at Lyt* telton yesterday, after a somewhat long passage of five days. , xt The only departure yesterday was the steamer Stormbird for Wanganui. The steamer Wanganui has commenced operations prior to taking on board the other boiler. Nearly all tha timber is now discharged from the Hannah Broomfield. The ship Pleione was not signalled during yesterday. As, however, there is a alight change in the weather, she will probably be heard of to-day. The s.s. Rangatira left Poverty Bay on Friday at 2 p.m., and arrived at Napier at 5 a.m. on Saturday ; landed 49 passengers, and left a,vaia at 12.15 p.m., passed Castlepoiot at 9.45 p.m., rounded Cape Palllser at 5 a. m. yesterday, and arrived at Wellington wharf five hours later. Experienced light N, W. breeze from Poverty Bay to Napier, thence till arrival fresh westerly gale with heavy head sea. As showing the jreatly increased speed of the Rangatira, wa may .itafce that she steamed the upward trip in the tast dmo of 13 hours 45 minutes, and the downward passage In 22 hours from Nelson to Castlepolnt. We “.hank Mr. Dougherty, purser, for report and files. The s.s. Taupo is due here from Auckland, via tho East Coast, this morning. . The schooner Cynthia arrived hero with another cargo of timber late on Friday night. She loft Peloms Round the same morning, and experienced N.W. weather till arrival. The Union Company’s steamer Wellington left Nelson at B.SO a m. on the 29th, and arrived at Picton i.t 6.30 p.m.; left again at 0.30 p m., and arrived at Wellington at 11 p.m. last night. Experienced a 1 eavy nor’-wester from Nelson to-Picton, with heavy thunder and lightning, accompanied with fierce hail squalls and high beam sea. Sighted a barque making for Port Nelson, which will probably be the Kentish Tar. which vessel is now overdue. Fine weather was experienced from Picton to arrival. We thank Mr. 1 itzer, the chief oiilcer, for report and files. An ingenious form of ventilating valve for moon hoard ship, has been invented by Mr. J. Sheppard, formerly manager to Messrs. Napier and Son. The wive, which has an opening to the atmosphere of 2 inches In diameter, is fastened inside the outer plating of tho vessel, aud is connected to*a pipe which puses up between the frames and opens into the cabin*. There is a slide to regulate-the quantity of a::r, and a screw-cap to close the orifice when desired. The chief feature of Interest is that tho valve is ao constructed as to pas* air freely, while it excludes the water. The valves have been fitted to the Dublin Castle, mail steamer, and are reported to answer their purpose in a very satisfactory manner, —European jlfatl.
