MILLER’S Office, Bull and A - - Mouth Hotel; Private Residence, Canning-terrace, Garlton-street, Melbourne. ABRIDGED FROM THE “ AUSTRALASIAN Sketoher” of 4th August, 1877. “ Our front cut this month is a sketch from life of one of these seances —the drawing of a £2OOO sweep on tho Melbourne Cup. The process is very simple. The committee are chosen from among tho subscribers by ballot, and invited to meet on a certain evening. Our artist was one of these privileged few. At eight o’clock, 30 subscribers having assembled, a chairman was elected, and then two scrutineers. Two thousand marbles, with the numbers cut in plain figures on them, are handed round, in trays of 100 each, to the members of the committee, for the purpose of being counted. This done, they are placed in a barrel. Then on plain marbles tho names of the horses are written ; these are put in a smaller barrel on tho table in front of the chairman. A volunteer is called for to ‘churn’ the larger barrel, and slips of paper being supplied to the committee, everything is ready. A marble is then drawn out of the larger barrel, the number called out and entered in a book, and then passed to the scrutineers. Then a horse is drawn out of the smaller barrel, and number and horse go together; and so on till the whole of tho horses are drawn. Everything is conducted with tho utmost fairness, and there la no possibility of anything ‘ crooked’ Tho affair lasted about an hour and a halt.” Result slips of tho drawing aro forwarded to country subscribers, and the amount is divided thus:— M ELBOUENE CUP, 187 3. Mr. J. J. MILLER may bo consulted as above, by letter only. Office : Bull and Mouth Hotel, Bourke-street, Melbourne.
