(per press agency.) Auckland, Friday. The recent rain brought down a large number of logs to Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach’s, Dargaville’s, and other saw-mills. A fishing yacht, from which two men are missing, and a dingy, have been picked up. It is supposed the men are drowned. At the Board of Education meeting it was stated that several young girls attending the training class have been taken with brain fever through over work. At the inquest re the death of Mr. Foley a verdict was returned that the deceased was illegally on the railway line, and that there was no blame attachable to the railway officials, Waitara, Friday. The public holiday in New Plymouth to-day, and the running of special trains, has brought a great number of people here. A procession of natives, headed by Rewi, marched through the township to their place of meeting at ten o’clock. Rewi, in addressing the various tribes, welcomed all to Waitara. The division of food is now taking place, and the meeting will then adjourn till to-morrow at noon. Nelson, Friday. A house belonging to Mr. Watkins, late manager of the Bank of New Zealand, -was completely destroyed by fire last night. It was in an isolated position, and had not been occupied for several weeks, Watkins and family having left for Taranaki. When the alarm was given the fire had a firm hold, and when the brigade arrived their services were of little avail. It was insured in the Victoria for £2OOO. Of the £2OOO insurance the Victoria had re-insured £IOOO with the Standard. Dunedin, Friday. The Attorney-General’s opinion is in favor of the position taken up by the Education Board, that that body has the power of refusing to appoint teachers recommended by any school committee. Mr. W. H. Cutten is a candidate for the Taieri District. Christchurch, Friday. At the conference of Municipal and County Council delegates last evening, it was resolved that in the opinion of the conference the existing local bodies should undertake the distribution of charitable aid until Government shall take measures in Parliament for the permanent transfer. The resolution was strongly opposed by the Christchurch delegate, who urged that the Government should not bo relieved of the duty of charitable aid distribution until permanent arrangements and subsidies be made by legislative enactment, otherwise there would be great trouble afterwards to get it done. The Canterbury Agricultural Association have passed resolutions in favor of the reestablishment of a National Agricultural Association for the Middle Island, and expressed an opinion thuo Christchurch should be the head-quarters of the association, and that the first exhibition should not be held till 1879. Mr. Benbow, of Wellington, the referee m the late chess match between Christchurch and Dunedin, has decided the disputed game in favor of Christchurch, which thus wins the match. The annual exhibition of the Christchurch Poultry Society was held to day. There were 370 exhibits and a large attendance of the public. The following are the returns of Government laud sales for the past twelve months Town lands, 94 acres, realised £2490 ; rural lands, 554,163 acres, realised £1,108,902. At a meeting of the Selwyn County Council to-day a resolution was carried similar to one adopted by the Christchurch City Council, to the effect that the Selwyn Council declines to undertake the administration of charitable aid till Government has placed _ the charitable institutions on a permanent basis by legislative enactment. m Timaiiu, Friday. Handicap, of 700 sovs.; distance, about four miles.—Brunette, Jack Sharp, Eaugh-a-Ballagh, Mickey Free, Lone Hand, Everslie, Stockman, The Agent, Turk, Shillelagh, Baron, Silverstream, Ivanhoe, Enfield (lato Sparrowtail). $ The steeplechases Will be held on Moudayi July 15.
