We are exceedingly glad to find that tlie remarks we made upon the extraordinary action of the Government in declaring that they intended to place in the market those portions of the Thorndon reclaimed land which would not be required for railway and purposes, have had the effect of causing the Government to review the matter, and to withdraw their written determination as announced to the Chamber of Commerce the other day. The justice of handing a large portion of this laud to the city upon receiving payment of the cost of reclamation, with some slight additions, has dawned upon the Ministerial mind, and Wellingtoniagoiugto be treated fairly, or as some people prefer to call it, liberally. A very silly and transparent excuse has been offered for the meanness lately intended to bo perpetrated, by saying that of course the Government could not be supposed to give away such a valuable property without being asked for it, as if the city had not time after time endeavored to get this very land. The correct mode of accounting for this hurried change is that it was found that an unpopular move had been made, and that the unfairness of the proposed action of placing the land in the open market having been drawn attention to by us, was at once so generally condemned that another course had to be hit upon.
