DEATH OF THE EX-KING OF HANOVER.
A Press telegram, received recently, announced the death of the ex-King of .Hanover (Duke of Cumberland in the British Peerage). “ Men of the Time” contains the following brief biography of him : George V. (George Frederick Alexander Charles Ernest Augustus), ex-King of Hanover, Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, in Great Britain, Earl of Armagh, in Ireland, Knight of the Garter, and first cousin to the Queen of England, the only son of the late King Ernest, who is better known in England as the Duke of Cumberland, was born at Berlin 27th May, 1819, and married 18th February, 1843, the Princess Alexandrina Maria, daughter of Joseph, reigning Duke of SaxeAlteuburg, by whom he has issue;—ErnestAugustus- William - Adolphus - George - Frederick, Crown Prince of Hanover, born 21st September, 1845 ; Frederioa-Sophia-Maria-Henrietta-Amelia-Theresa, born 9th January, 1848 ; and Maria-Ernestina-Josephine-Adol-phine - Henrietta-Theresa- Elizabeth-Alexan-drina, born 3rd December, 1849. The late King of Hanover succeeded to the throne upon the death of his brother King William IV. of England, 20th June, 1837, 'when by the Salic law of Hanover, the two kingdoms were disunited; and died 18th November, 1851, being succeeded by his son, the present King, who unhappily suffers from a total deprivation of sight. His Majesty, who is said to be an excellent musician, took part with Austria in the German war of 1866. and his territories were occupied by the Prussians early in June. Hanover was annexed to Prussia by decree 20th September, 1866, and the Prussians took possession 6th October.
