FOOTBALL.

A very rvell contested match at football was played yesterday on the Basin Reserve between teams representing the Wellington College and the English High School. Play commenced at 3 o’clock, and there were four games of 20 minutes each, but there was no score on either side, the match ending in a draw. For the College, A. Mortal), who was captain, played very well indeed, part of the time as half-back, and part as quarter-back. Moorhonse proved the best of the forwards. Dransfield, who kept goal, made some good kicks, and in the last 20 minutes, when lie was put among the forwards, he worked very hard for goal. Knight, a quarter-back, wrs noticeable for his determined collaring. Barnett also distinguished himselfjin the same way, and Snow did good service for his side. Kemble, who captained the High School boys, was sometimes half and sometimes quarter-back, and wherever he was he, by his activity and nimbleness, showed a good example to his comrades. Tally made some capital rims, and played with a rood deal of dash, Speody’s kicking was capital, and Halliday made at least one very good run. Bishop, a forward, made several smart kicks, and Barraud often gave help where it was much wanted.

Play was begun by Speedy kicking off for the High School Boys, and Morrah, who got thei ball, by making a smart dash soon had it near his opponents* gaol ; but the other side quickly changed this state of things, and kept the ball dangerously near the College goal, In the second twenty minutes Tally got a touch just at the corner of the ground, which was held to bo out of bounds, and in punting the hall out the College got it and drove it clear of danger. After the next change the High School secured some forcedowns, which did not score in the match, bat could not get a try. In the lost twenty minutes the College boy's worked with great determination and dash to make a goal, but their opponents, who were equally active and energetic, protected their ground, and the match ended in a draw. Taylor and Cooper, two of the College team, did not play, as they had been picked by the Athletic Club in tbe side for this afternoon’s match, and they preferred keeping themselves fresh.
