Thursday, June 20. (Before J. C. Crawford, Esq., E.M.) DRUNKENNESS.

Two inebriates were dealt with in tbe usual way. Afemalewho was evidently suffering very much from tbe effects of drink was remanded for a week at her own request. LARCENY PROM A DWELLING.

Thomas Campbell was brought up on a charge of stealing several articles from a dwelling-house in Courtenay-place. Mr. Gordon Allan appeared for the prisoner. On the application of Inspector Atcheson, the prisoner was remanded till Monday next, bail being allowed, himself in £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO each. Inspector Atcheson stated that on the previous day a cabman was hunting about with a view to prisoner being liberated on bail, but he (the Inspector) would object to the cabman in question as a surety. The prisoner was then removed. LARCENY OP A CHEQUE. William Duffy was charged with stealing a cheque for £2O 16s Bd, the property of Mr. O. O. N. Barron. Mr. Moorhouse appeared for the prisoner. Mr. Barron deposed that he was chief reporter of Hansard. The Hansard reporters were paid monthly. It was his duty to give them the cheques. On the 4th June he missed a cheque for £2O 16s Bd. He signed the cheque on the 31st May. It was on his table on the Ist June. It was in favor of- Mr. Wm. Mitchell. The cheque was countersigned by him (Mr. Barron) and was not payable without hia signature. He had not seen the cheque since he missed it. The cheque produced was the same. The cheques were laid upon the tables for the reporters to take them. The cheque was placed

in an envelope, but not sealed. The envelope was addressed to Mr. Mitchell. The envelope was left, and the cheque taken out of it. Did not know that prisoner was employed in the Government offices. Thomas Freeman Morey deposed : I am a draper’s assistant at Mr. Alcorn’s. I took a cheque from a youth tor £2O 16s. Bd. on last Saturday night fortnight. It was between 6 and 7 o’clock. The lad appeared to be 14 years of age. He asked me if I could cash a cheque. I asked him what it was for, and perhaps I might. He said it was a Government cheque. I asked the boy who it was for, and he said for Mrs. Duffy. I took the cheque to Mr. Alcorn, and he gave me change for it, and I gave the change to the boy. The cheque produced is the same. I don’t think I should know the boy again. [The younger Duffy was brought into Court.] I shouldn’t think that is the boy ; he was much bigger. The boy didn’t make any purchase. S. C. Barraud, ledger-keeper at the Bank'of New Zealand, deposed that the cheque produced was cashed at the bank. Joseph Duffy (prisoner’s brother) deposed : My brother worked in the Government Printing Office. I remember my brother giving mo a cheque to cash on a Saturday night about two weeks ago. It was a Government cheque. I do not know how much money I got for it at Alcorn’s. I gave the money to my brother. Mr. Moorhouse reserved his defence. Prisoner was then committed for trial at the Supreme Court, his father’s surety of £SO being accepted for his appearance to take his trial. CIVIL CASES. S. W. Alcorn v. J. E. Gilbert, £l6 25.; judgment summons ; ordered to pay within fourteen days. William Jameson v. Joseph Jameson, £29 19s. 2d.; judgment for plaintiff for £22 9s. sd. J. Smith v. W. Firth, £4 4s. Bd.; judgment for amount claimed and costs, 9s. D. Asher v. R. Davis, £7 6s. 3d.; judgment for amount claimed and costs, 15s. George and Baird v. 11. E. Tonks, £55 10s.; judgment for amount claimed and costs, £5.
