Three Homo shirs are now overdue, and anxiously looked for. Should they bo anywhere about our coast the probability is their numbers will be hoisted during the present week. The only two Home vessels now in the harbor are the Chaudiere and Chasca, both loading for London. As must be expected, however, at this season of the year, it is no easy matter to have cargo always at hand, the consequence being that they are filling up somewhat slower than could be wished. As yet tallow and hides and a little wool comprise the greater part of their cargoes. The weather during the past two weeks has been anything but pleasant for our large fleet of coastal steamers and small sailing craft. Fortunately, however, no mishap of any serious consequence has occurred since our last summary. The steamer GoAhead, mentioned In our lost as being a new addition to our local line of steamers, met with a trifling accident a short distance from the Heads. One oi her propellers by some means broke short off, which compelled her to return to port. The following day she was put on the Slip, when the necessary repairs wer p effected by Mr. E, W. Mills. She is now we ' " happy to say, as good as ever. Some little »’ , tt f e was felt at Port Lyttelton by the non-appp' -uxlety the ketch Margaret, which left that pi- trance of April. No tidings whatever were h*»* *^ ce nearly eight weeks, when news was * -* rt } °f her for ton that she was safe outside tb* wrought to Lyttelonly 20 tons register, had J* J Heads. The Union Steam Shipping Company are about to increase their already fine fleet of steamers. The one in contom. platlon ia to bo 1800 tons, and built and fitted with ' all the latest improvements. A steam launch is also to be added to the fleet, for the purpose of loading and discharging their cargoes In places where there are no natural harbors. This of itself will bo » great boon, not only to shippers but also for passengers of whom there a largo number always travelling fn these steamer.!. Another steamer will probably be added to our small coastal fleet. Tenders arc called for the building of a steamer for the Patea trade and ac cording to her specifications she will bo a Imndsomo Addition. The number of small sailing crafts nrin schooners, from the neighboring coast with timber and colonial produce, appears to bo on the increase, particularly In the timber trade, aa four or live of them arrive weekly bringing an average supply of between 70 000 an,l 80,000 feet eaeL Wrfn£ the early part of the raonlU Wellington was very short of coal, and though there were several colliers due from Newcastle it was some time afterwards before they arrived. Nosooner did one put In an appearance, however, than three or four followed, and in less than a fortnight 6000 tons of Newcastle coal was landed, and most of the vessels clear, d away again for another cargo. The onlv Home ships that have left since our last summary have been the barque Xtlalto for London with seven passengers, the Leucidia for London on tho Cth mat., and the Canmerc for Vafparaso on tho 7th Inst, •The three-masted schooner May hit hereon tho sth lust., bound /or Hongkong for another cargo of tea Xlm number of steamers that have arrived in Welling- i ton since last summary for Home Is 72, and 30 sailing 1 Vessels. Of the sailing vessels eight were from New- 1 castle, and one' from ilobarton. The steamers with t two exceptions, are all from tho Coast. ]
