SINGULAR ATTEMPT TO STEAL A VESSEL. ■Early Inst month Lloyd’s agent reported that a vessel had entered Hampton Roads, United States, under somewhat peculiar circumstances, and it was supposed that barratry had been committed. Advices from New York, received by the mail, confirm tho suspicion. The particulars are as followsA vessel arrived at Baltimore on the 7th March, fand was entered at the Custom House as the British brigantine Alexis, George Williams, master, from Porto Cabello, Venezuela. She hod a cargo of 4877 bags of coffee, weighing 505,5341b5, and 822 bides. A Mr. J. Kin near, an Englishman, 35 years old, and his colored servant, were pasiiengers in her. He represented himself as the owner of the cargo, and came with it to Hampton Roads, as ho believed the United States was the best market. The papers of the brig seemed irregular, and aroused suspicion. Inquiries were instituted, tho final result of which was that tho vessel was fonnd to bo the British brigantine Alice, 203 tons register, built at Indlantown, New Brunswick, In 1863, formerly owned in St. John's, New Brunswick, but now of Liverpool, and commanded by Captain Campbell. She had been chartered to take the cargo, which was the property of several Hamburg merchants, from Porto Cabello to that port. Tho cargo was Insured in Europe for 92,000d01. in gold. The coffee and hides were discharged and stored In a warehouse at Canton, Baltimore. The Secretary of the Treasury has given orders to hold tho cargo until tho ownership of tho property Is fully established. Tho man who reposted himself as captain was chief officer of tho Alice when the vessel loaded at Porto Cabello. It is believed that K!unear took passage on tho brig at Porto Cabdlo, and that ho entered into a conspiracy with tho mate to seize the vessel and cargo. They, in collusion with the crew, murdered the captain and brought the brig to Baltimore. Klnnear stopped at one of tho leading hotels in that city, but upon hearing of the investigation departed suddenly* leaving his colored servant behind. Tho officers and crew have also escaped. The British Consul placed a watchman In custody of the brig, and sho is hold to await identification. —Glasgow Herald, April Cth.
