The Eev. Mr. Hazleton, who is at present in this city for the purpose of raising contributions in aid of the Wesleyan College, Dublin, has received a considerable amount of support in Auckland, and has met with a reception hero that promises a liberal addition to the fund. Some persons have taken obieotion to Mr. Hazleton’s mission, on the ground that it is unfair to ask people in New Zealand to subscribe in aid of educational institutions in the old country; but those who entertain this view surely have forgotten the obligations which this colony lies under to associations and individuals in the mother country who liberally subscribed towards the endowment and support of the various Churches in New Zealand. The Wesleyan College in Dublin seems to be an institution which can well claim support [from the colonies, for whatever progress we may make in training the preachers of various denominations, congregations must, for years to come, look to the old country for their ministers. Moreover, Mr. Hazleton’s mission is not one that is likely to be so obtrusively pressed upon the public notice as to render it probable that the contributions ho may obtain will be of an amount that could to any degree impoverish the colony, or weaken the financial position of the denomination to which he belongs. We wish that Mr. Hazleton may be successful.
