Tuesday, Juke 11. (Before J. 0. Crawford, Esq., R.M.) DESERTION.

A seaman named Patrick Chambers was charged by the master of the schooner Cynthia with deserting from his vessel on Monday. Complainant stated that the prisoner was chief officer of the schooner. On the last voyage he (prisoner) had several times made use of abusive language, and on the day in question went ashore. Mr. Crawford explained that his going on shore could scarcely be called desertion.

The information was then amended to a charge of “ absent without leave.” Prisoner stated that he had signed articles for £8 a month, and that the master wanted to pay him off at the rate of £6 per month. Prisoner was sent to gaol for 18 hours. ASSAULT.

John Lethaby, an umbrella-member, was charged on the information of Mrs. Catherine Gray with assaulting her on the 7th instant. Complainant stated that the defendant called at her house to collect sixpence which was owing to him. Witness asked him to call again as she was busy. Defendant then attempted to push open the door, and made use of disgusting language. ■ After hearing the evidence,.Mr.. Crawford

said he had a doubt as to whether any real assault had been committed, and dismissed the case, both parties to pay their own costs. LARCENY'. William Duffy and Joseph Duffy, two boys in the Government Printing Office, were charged by the police wi h stealing a cheque for £2O 16s. 8dOn the application of the police the hearing of the case was adjourned until next Monday. APPLICATION FOR PROTECTION ORDERS. Mrs. S. J. Hill applied for a protection order against her husband, Samuel John Hill. The case was adjourned until Saturday, the defendant undertaking not to go near his wife in the meantime. Mrs. Elizabeth Dockery also applied for a protection order against her husband, which was granted. The husband was ordered to contribute 12s. a week towards her support.
