A fresh southerly breeze detains the Wanganui. An attempt will be made to float the Ann Gambles to-iuorrow by means of a centrifugal pump.; There was very little work dons about the wharf yesterday, owing to the rain which came down incessantly till day. The only arrivals were tho Wanaka, Mamvwatu. and Napier. The steamer Napier arrived from Blenheim last evening at six o'clock. She left Blenheim at seven o’clock the same morning, and experienced strong southerly winds n sth thick weather. She is expected to sail again at night. TKo steamer Tui. which was to have left last night for Foxton, was detained through the weather. She Yfill sail to-night should there bo the slightest chance of the weather breaking. A gang of Mr. Williams* m°n lowed the shattered buoy of the bulk Ell Whitney to the wharf yesterday, when it was huLted ashore. The steamer Wanaka from tho South arrived in harbor yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. She reports leaving Fort Chalmers on Siturday evening at 4 o’clock; culled at Akaroa, and arrived at Lyttelton at 2 o’clock on Sunday. Left again at 0 o'clock on Monday, and arrived here as above. Tlie Wanaka leaves again to-day for the North The steamer Maiiftwatu "returned from Wanguauf yesterday afternoon. She reports having left Jon Monday night, crossed the bar at half-post ten, taking in tow the schooner Awaroa for Nelson. Experienced light south-east weather to Kaipi. from thence- fresh south-east winds, with thick, hazy weather. The ketch Forest Queen, which left here on Thursday for Lyttelton, arrived at her destination on Saturday. She experienced strong S.W. winds till arrival. The brigantine Authoress, whfeh left here the same day, arrived at Lyttelton oi* Friday. The schooner Hannah Barcatt, from here* arrived at Lyttelton Saturday. ' The schooner May was at. anchor in Wbrser Bay when the Manawajtu entered tlie Heads yesterday. Wnere first inspected tlie ball was found to be quite foil ot sand, hence. as-there was no means of getting; inside, operations had to be conducted on the h.oij. They were raised raid taken on shore, but on examination proved to be too much broken to bo of any use in refitting the engines. A final charge was put inside tlie boiler, which contained no sand, having been protected by the cover on the 'manhole. The dynamite rested on the tubes, about half way down, and when fired the top plate of the holler was scut flying through tlie able a height of about 30U feet. The same force being exercised downwards, there is every reason to suppose that the work of destruction was Completed, but the diver remains behind to make a last survey. From tiie IFe-dent Star we learn that Messrs. Held anil Hon have expressad themselves as being highly satisfied with the result of Mr. Gorman’s work.
