F. E. Weight, ' ; .-''i '■ Secretary pro’ leni. '•’ , - The promoter.--, in to the public this most valuable prOperty'of * one square mile of land (640'acres), hold-under lease for twentyone years at- la. per acre from the Native t,auds Commissioner, Nelson,-do_so‘ in the firm belief, that this coalfield will be the source of a - very large part of the 'supply for the ’ whole of the colony. The" coal is - better known in Nelson !, ; than in auy 'otlier'qiait.'of New Zealand, as ; small traders have for many 'years past been inthe iiabit of supplying that'market-from this district to a limited extent; and the coal is so- i well: liked, that it- is understood none other would be used tor domestic purposes could a constant supply be depended on. The pro--1 mbtiirs of this proposed company have at considerable expense, to prove beyond doubt tho existence of an exteusiva coalfield, sunk a shaft 50ft„ driven bli the coal on main level 53ft.; put in a heading of 20ffc., aud have a’chamber ofTOft. square:' The seaui of coal is about sft. 6i.r. thick,' witli a tendency to increase. There is a 10 horsepower engine bn the spot, ropes, gear, boat, buildings, &c. ? :. &.0., now “working under “only’’ these prospecting appliances/ yet getting out from seven to ten tons of coal' per day. : While a main "workingshaft is being put down,, with very little addition to present, appliances', fully 100 tons per week of the coal could bo 1 raised. The pro- i meters aye fully assured that, the coal has only, to be placed in the various markets to be duly appreciated. With that in. view they have already several cargoes bn their way |to this port, so that 1 the public cah test the coal and judge for themselves. All householders,' hotel keepers, factors,' and others arc ’earnestly invited to take shares in this company, that promises such, undoubted success. It is contemplated, immediately after the formation of the company; to purchase or have built one or more steam colliers suitable for the trade. The West Wanganui Inlet is said to bo the best harbor on the West Coast; the bar is unchangeable, and at high water has 10ft.; at midtide, 14ft.; 'and at low water not less than, 7ft. Ingress and egress can be bad at all times. 1 The inlet covering a distance of some, nine or ten miles in length, aud from two to three miles in breadth, and being acted ou by the sea only, it is never subject to floods; aud considering its contiguity tb all tbo centres of population, it is ; calculated that screw steam colliers will be enabled to raaku from five to six trips per month.-' ! The promoters reserve to themselves 1400 paid-up shares as their proportion of this valuble coalfield and plant. , 1 Application for, shares to be made to tbo Bank of New Zealand and its branches ; also, at tho offices of the Provisional Directors/ where all-further information can he,obtained. fELSON JAM AND FRUIT PREI‘ SERVING COMPANY.
