Tile barque Rialto, bound for London, is still in port, being detained through the prevalence of southerly wind. ■ • ... ■ The 8.8. Arawata, from Melbourne, via the South, is expected to arrite here to-morrow morning. She will sail again for Melbourne, via the Sonth, on Prirlay at 10,80 a.m., taking the outward Sues mail. The s.s. Murray arrived hero from Nelson at 6 a.m. yesterday, with cargo and passengers. She left Nelson at 3 a.m. on Monday, and experienced. S. E. weather through the Strait. The Murray will sail for Nelson and West Coast ports at 5 o’clock this afternoon. . The p s. Manawatu, with a full cargo and a number of passengers, sailed for Wanganui at 12.30 p.m. yesterday. ’ ~ „ The ketch Falcon was taken up on Messrs. Coffey and Dixon’s slip yesterday to, secure an overhaul. The Star of the South, for Southern, ports, and Lyttelten, for Blenheim, sailed last evening. The s.s Taupo. from the South, arrived In port at lL3fta.m. yesterday. She left Port Chalmers Heads on Sunday last at 4 p.m., and arrived In Lyttelton at &15 a.m.; sailed again at 7 p.m. same day, and arrived- as above-stated. Experienced fine weather throughout the trip. The Taupo will sail for Auckland, via the East Coast, to-day at noon. The s.s. Jane Douglas came off the Patent Slip yesterday afternoon, after being cleaned and painted. She is announced to go to Foxton to-day. ■ The s.«. Stormbird arrived here from Wanganui at 0 o’clock last night with a 100 sheep consigned to Mr. Gear, and a full cargo of tallow, Ac. She left Wanganni wharf at half-past C o’clock on Tuesday night, but as she stuck in the river coming down, was unable to cross the bar till 7 o’clock yesterday morning. Had head winds and fine weather throughout the trip. Tho Stormbird will sail again for Wangnaal at 2 o’clock to-morrow afternoon. The as. Her dimensions are to be 270 ft. keel, Jolt, beam; and 26ft.- depth of hold; giving 1800 tons buildere* measurement, or 1000 tons net Tills will make her carrying capacity, exclusive of 600 tons of coal in the bunkers, equal to 1000 tons measurement, on a maximum draught of 36ft. A notable feafnre in her build will be a double bottom, which in addition to giving her increased ftrength, will be ukilfsea for the purpose oTcarrying water as ballast, a plan considered superior to tanks. She will be propelled by a Screw driven by a pair of engines of SOO-h.p. nominal, placed amidships, similar in construction to those in the s.s. Wakatipu, which give a very'large Indicated power bn a moderate consumption of fuel. : The high pressure cylinder will be 461 n. In diameter, and the low pressure cylinder will be S2in.,‘with a stroke of •Iffc. These engines are to drive her at the average rate of 14 knots per hour at sea. Ste&m will be supplied by four boilers placed athwart ship, a very convenient method, and one thal admits of a well-venti-lated stoke-hole. The bunkers, will also be placed athwart ship, one at each end of the boiler space. The crew will find quarters below deck, right forward, as the vessel will bo flush fore aud aft, with bulwarks which will mako her dryer and afford more shelter to those who have to keep the deck. Steam winches, steam steering gear, and an independent steam windlass will be found among her deck fittings. As soon after the model and plans are finished as is possible, the order for the construction of this line vessel, which will eclipse anything yet in the colonies, will be sent home. ~
The Union Company will also shortly call for tenders in the colony for the construction of a
PASSEWER LAUNCH for the company's use. as there arc se~eral places in; the colony where such a vessel can tender the larger steamers and act as feeders to them, gathering cargo between whiles from different points to the North or South of the port where she may be stationed. Her length will bo 65ft. keel, 70ft. overall, 12f, beam, and 6fL depth of hold, having a light draught of 2ft. 910. The framing ii to bel|ln„ with an average of S’-lOths of an Inch plating. She will bo arranged first with a collision bulkhead, then a saloon 20ft. long, a baggage hold 10ft.. Jong coming next, and abaft that the engine-room, the'space right aft being fitted up for the crew. The engines, compound surface condensing, of 12-h.p. nominal, will indicate GO-h.p., the high pressure cylinder being lOln. in diameter, and the low pressure cylinder Isin., the speed expected from them being 10 knots per hour. A. single mast, to which will be rigged a derrick and a small steam winch, to hoist in or , out cargo, will be supplied. Tenders lor tills work u 111 be called for shortly.
