THE RANGITOTO MINE.

\Ye bare been favored by Mr. F. A Krull, the ’Wellington agent of the compauy, with the following satisfactory letter in reference to. the prospects of the Rangitoto Silver "Mine, which is a subject of much interest in all parts of the colony:—■ ■ - “ Hokitika, May 22, 1878. “ Snt, —It again affords me great pleasure to Inform you of the improving prospects of Itangitoto. “ Mr. Schoiifelter reports that he is on a fine vein of silver ore fsilver blende and fine grain galena) of permanent character, enclosed in splendid white quartz of the best description for mineral. He compares the ore to that met with at Anclreasberg,.in the Hertz, and is now fully satisfied that he is opening up a most valuable mine, the importance of which at present it is difficult to realise. I may say that the characteristics, of the ore are entirely different to that which was discovered in the outcrop in its early history, the pyrites of the upper vein not being found in the present one, the ore being almost free from this sulphurous 1 association. “ The directors are so impressed with its importance that they are sending up a battery at once, so as to crush, dress, and prepare the ore for shipment. Mr. Schoiifelter would very much like Professor Ulrich to visit the mins, or any other eminent mineralogist, in order to convince the public of the importance of the district.. , A - deputation; of ; directors, waited to-day on the Council, in order that they might request the General Government to consent to so doing, as it is regarded by all classes as of vital'interest to the colony generally that such an important enterprise should result successfully. “In conclusion, I may inform you that the prospects of the company never were better, and are daily improving now that the settled country is entered upon, and the most sanguine expectations are entertained in the future.—l have, &c., “ J.
