Orowther, storekeeper, of this town, dropped down dead at her son-in-law’a (Mr. McCulloch's) house at noon to-day, aged 75. 'The proximate cause of death is supposed to have been apoplexy. . 1 .. _ (per press agency.) Auckland, Tuesday. Sir J. Goode examined the harbor, and will send hie report from San Francisco. Alexandra, Tuesday. It is considered here that there is but little chance of the Kingite .meeting coming off at present. Several leading chiefs say there is no hurry, and that it will be in plenty of time to consider Sir George Grey’s proposals ten years hence. The chiefs seem inclined to ask for more than has been promised. Christchurch, Tuesday. The Middle Park Company’s colt St. George, own brother to Chester, is among the Canterbury entries for the Dunedin St.. Leger Stakes, 1880. Dunedin, Tuesday. The Herald this morning, commenting on the trial of Whitaker v. Jones, says that the costs of the prosecution will be considerably under £2OO, while that of the defence, according to bill of costs recently delivered,-will amount to £2117 Its. Among the items composing the hill are the following:— Paid Mr. Rees, £540 j paid Mr. Rees (refresher), £275 ; paid Mr. Hislop, £270 ; refresher to Mr. Hislop, £137 10s. It is stated that other similar items could be culled from the bill of costs presented by Rees and Hislop. All the papers published here, with the exception of the Times, severely censure the Government for giving advertisements only to those papers which support the Ministerial policy. ■fudges Harvey and Pearson, of Invercargill, have been appointed to. inquire into certain charges against Mr. Warden Stutford, preferred by a firm at Queenstown, Doherty and party have returned from Dusky Scund by the steamer Maori, bringing two tons of specimens from the copper lode there. They broke some 12ft. into the crown of the lode, and report the prospects to be exceedingly favorable. The specimens they have brought are very rich in the more valuable copper ore, with indications also of native copper. ■ ‘ ■ ■ .
