FOOTBALL.
The match Civil Service v. Town came off on the Basin Beserve on Saturday afternoon, There were fifteen players on either aide. The names have already been published. The. result of the match was a decided victory for. the Civil Service, who scored two goals, two tries, four touchdowns, against one goal to the other side, H. Pollen captained the Civil Service, and T. Welsh the Town. Welsh started the contest by kicking the ball shortly after three o’clock. The Town appeared .to have the best of it for the first twenty minutes. A. Campbell made the first ran, and got a good kick for the Town side. Davy made a fair catch, and placed the ball for Kerr, who secured the first goal by a splendid kick. Sorimmageafter scrimmage then took place, and in this particular there was a decided improvement upon : the ..last match, the play being more together. Castelli got the ball clear, and made a fine run, but was at last collared by Cowie. , Kerr next made a kick into “ touch and secured a force-down for the Civil Service. Another scrimmage then took place, after which Welsh got the balloutaud made a dropkick over the goal. Owing, however, to some infringement of the rules by the forwards, the umpires disallowed the score. Berry next came to tho fore, and made a good run, but
was collared by Davy, who then made the beat run of the day, and ran through all his men in capital style, securing a touch-down for his side. Kerr tried a long Icicle i for a goal, but was unfortunate in the attempt. Bi-hop next made a grand run, hut was stopped in his career by Biacklook. Kerr then got the ball, but was not allowed to do much, aa he was tripped up by Welsh, who added another force-down to the Civil Service. At this time two of ths team belonging to the Town side left, which necessarily rendered their side very weak. Bishop made a good run, but was collared by Lockett. Campbell next made a run for the Town side, but was collared by Bollen. Churton then got the ball, made a fair run, and secured a try. Kerr then kicked a goal. The Town side now were evidently pulling themselves together, aud , determined to play their best. Boze for the Civil Service made a good run, but was collared by Moran, C. Webb then got hold of the ball, and made a good run, backed up by Pollen, 0., who secured another touch-down. Kerr had another try, but again missed it. After several other scrimmage-, Kembell, one of ilia youngest players present, got the ball aud made a splendid run, aud scored a goal by one of the prettiest drop-kicks of the day. Davy, who played with great spirit during the whole of the match, next made a grand run and had passed through all his men, but Campbell, who charged him, knocked him over, and saved a touch-down. Time was now called. The watch was decidedly the best that has been played this season, and a good number of persons were present to witness it. As several iKgojjA players on the Town side were absent, there is some talk of the match being played ; gain, ' ; . '
