(moil oua owif coauEsroNDENT.) Halcombe, May 16. . . The first service in connection with the Church of England was held here on the 12th inst. Fending the arrival and induction of a , regularly-ordained clergyman, Mr. Shorwill conducts the services, while Mrs, Sbcnvell, ■■ notwithstanding that that lady is still. snffer- - ing from the effects of her late severe accident, manages in a very creditable manner the musical part of the services. It has transpired that the Feilding, Choral*. Society has kindly promised to give a concert at Halcomhe in order to raise funds for the purchase of a harmonium., . The one now in use belongs to Mr, Child, to whom the congregation are much indebted for the loan of so good an instrument. Through communication from Foxton to Wanganui will be an accomplished fact on the 20th inst. To celebrate so important an event some of the leading townspeople and i ottlers propo le giving a banquet on the 27th inst. Invitations have been issued to the beads of the Kailway Department, to gentlemen of the learned professions, and to gentlemen representing- the banking, commercial,' and agricultural interests of Foxton, Foilding, .Palmerston, and Markon. Mr. Hastie, of thei Halcomhe Hotel, is to provide' the necessary l mtnit.

Ihe Halcomhe sawmills have passed into the hands of Mr, W, H. Kush, who starts business Doxt week with the execution o! a Government contract for 30,(00 sleepers.

Tho undermentioned gentlemen have been elected as a school committee for the years 1878-9: —Messrs. Sherwill, Linton, Lush, Quanie, Scott, Silby, and C. Loudon, with the first-named as chairman. After the election Mr. Sherwill proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Robert Linton, upon that gentleman’s retirement from the chairmanship, and in doing so referred in eulogistic terms to the valuable services which. Mr. Linton had rendered to the cause of education in this district. This vote of thanks was very favorably received by all present, and the meeting then separated in the usual manner. It may be mentioned for your information that there will be, after the 22nd last., a daily mail from Wellington to Wanganui and intermediate places, so that your files will be to hand in this town not later than 7 p.m. on the day of issue. . ■
