SPECIAL TELEGBAM. London, May 18. A San Francisco telegram states that the Russian Government have purchased the steamer City of Sydney, which sailed fdrSydney last Monday, -from the Pacific Company ; also, the steamer State of California, launched yesterday, and that they are in treaty for two other steamers. Telegrams from the Continent are more hopeful. It is reported that Schouvaloff is convinced that it is to Bussia’a interest to yield to the demands for a Congress, which it is now expected will meet, in spite of troubles which have arisen at Stamboui. A mill has beeu burnt at Hartiugden by the rioters, but otherwise affairs are more quiet. , London, May 18. The money market is steady ; Consols are firm at 96J. There is great speculation and activity on the Stock Exchange. The market for Australian securities is remarkably fbm. New Zealand 5 per cent, consols are now quoted, and New, Zealand 4J per Cent, of February' and August are also now quoted* The wool sales exhibit gi’eat weakness a» they progress, and the languor has led to considerable withdrawals. The prices on the average show a decline of Id. per lb. The fall is most strongly marked in respect to washed greasy cross-breds. The corn market is weak, with a downward tendency. The prospect of the wheat harvest at Home is favorable. Sailed—Aconcagua and Orient, steamers. (REUTER'S SPECIAL TO PRESS AGENCY,) San Fkancisco, May 17. The Bussian agents have bought the swift steamer State of California. St. Petebsbubg, May 17. It is believed here that Schouvaloff has convinced the Emperor that it is Bussia’s interest to yield to the English demands re the European Congress, the meeting of which now appears assured. London, May 19. The Daily News states that General Todleben has sent to the Porte an ultimatum, demanding that the Turks should evacuate Shumla, Varna, and Batoum, and the Bussian occupation of Buyukdere. A serious riot has occurred at Preston. Constantinople, May 18. Notwithstanding the pacific tone of the St. Petersburg news the. Bussians continue mass-, ing troops nearer to Constantinople aud the Bosphorus. The Bussians are also advancing near Gallipoli, Their head-quarters remain at San Stefano. St. Petebsbpbg, May 19. Schouvaloff has started for London. The Bussian semi-official journals state that the movements of the Russian troops are for reasons of health ; the occupation of Constantinople is not intended. : AGENT-GENERAL’S TELEGRAM. The Government has received the following cablegram from the Agent-General:— London, May 11. Bills are accepted, aud an advance obtained to meet bills falling due.
