Edwin. : ' The schooner Uno left Nelson on Friday last with a strong north-west gale, and same night she ran Into • Cloudy Bay for shelter. Left again on Wednesday, when the gale showed signs of moderating: but as sire stood across the Strait it Increased In violence and she had to bring Up inside Bsrratt’s Beef same night. Yesterday morning, a south-easter coming, on, she hove up one anchor and slipped and buoyed the other, and arrived at. the breastwork shortly afterwards. She brings over a cargo of timber. ■ The schooner Rose of Eden, which anchored at the Heads yesterday, bound to Pelnrus Sound, tan back to port yesterday morning, having slipped both her anchors there, ■ owing, to the, sudden change of the wind to the south-east. ~ , , The Schooner Maiden City a-rivedhere from Pelorus •Sound yesterday, afternoon, after a stormy passage across. She cleared the Sound on Saturday, and encountered a heavy north-west gale, which compelled her to go up Queen Charlotte Sound for shelter. Left there on Tuesday, and after a heavy passage across the Strait anchored In Worser Bay oh Wednesday, where ' she remained till yesterday morning, when a southerly wind springing up, she ran into port with it, and as above stated. ■ The schooner lost one of her anchors while In Worser Bay. The Taranaki, from the South, Is due hero to-day, and'is to sail for Taranaki and the Manukauat4 p.m. The s.s. Napier sailed for Blenheim at 7 o’clock -lastevening. . ‘ " .. The a,s. Eotorna should be here to-day from Sydney, -via Napier and Auckland, and sail South at 3 o’clock ‘ln the afternoon. ' : -

o- The topsail schooner Mary King, with a full cargo of produce, arrived In port from < ’amoru yesterday afternoon. She left there on Saturday last, and had to contend, against strong north-west gales up the ' coast till arrival off Kaikoura yesterday morning, - when the wind suddenly shifted at 7 a.m. into the south-west, and blew very hard, carrying the vessel up to port, arriving a» above stated; Saw several vessels' under Cape Campbell, and also a number going thraugh the Strait., The s.s. -Wellington sailed for Picton and Nelson at 12 o'clock last night. The Margaret Galbraith allied out of Evans Bay yesterday afternoon, and brought up at the outer anchorage. The schooner Colleen Bawn. Hamilton, master, •arrived In harbor yesterday afternoon from Wanganui, bound to Pelorns Bound, having, put in here through stress of weather, and with the' toss of both her anchors. She left Wanganui on tho 10th with a cargo of bricks, lime, coal, &0., and after crossing the fiat experienced, heavy northerly winds, which subWfiVteotly hauled mio W; and W.N.W., and Mew a wuu « umler close-reefed iofesall only, but the gale blew so violently that ine was unable to S .L 8 Sound, and then an effort was made to get into Tory Channel, but It likewise failed, and she iwi to ran into Cloudy Bay, anchoring there on Sun--5“ night tat, the wind blowing at. the time a most terrific B gale. The Colleen Bawn dragged her anchors .torfoilr miles, but a 101 l In the storm coming on they were weighed, and the. Schooner heatup to windward aealt where she anchored ahead of the barque Edwin ’Bassett She had scarcely done so when the gale 1 came on with redoubled fury, and on Tuesday one of the anchors parted, and next day the other went, one ‘with 20 fathoms chain, and the other by the shackle, together with BO fathoms Klard rope, pe only “resource then left was te put to sea, and during all 5 Wednesday night and a portion of yesterday morning the little craltjwaa hove-to In a terrific N.W. gale, ■which drove her to the southward of Cape Campbell, when the wind chopped Into the southward at 4 a.m. yesterday, and she then’ squared away tor this port, Arriving as above staled. The barque Edwin Bassett got out of Cloudy Bay ton Wednesday, but ran back there again yesterday morning, owing to the heavy N.W. gale blowing. Sho had scarcely reached the-anchorage when the wind chopped into tho 3.E., and she bore away before it for Newcastle. : Early yesterday morning, during the height of the north-east gale, the barque Canmoto, whfch was moored to the north side of the wharf, carried away 3ier head moorings, and swung off forward for a dis-; tanco of about 30ft. : The steamer Moa and ketch Forest Queen, which were lying alongside her, were 'thus brought In close proximity to the coalhulk Albion, which was moored close to the Carlota on the opposite T, and as there was a very heavy sea running urt the time great danger was incurred by the vessels together; but by dint of considerable exertion very little damage was done. The fenders between tho vessels were of course ground np considerably, and the ketch's cathead was carried away. The Canmore herself was prevented from swinging round broadside to the wind by her two anchors, which were out, but her stern was very close to one of the new Ironbotk plies which was put down a day or two ago, but the top of which has not yet been sawn off, and if sho had gone astern only a few feet, there was considerable probability of the pile knocking a hole throfigb her counter. As soon as the accident occurred a messenger was despatched for Captain Halllday, who arrived promptly on tho wharf, and commenced to use his best exertions In getting the barque re-moored. The crew of tho ship Leucadiaalso turned out and lent A willing hand In getting the several vessels out of their unpleasant position, and after a few hours of hard work all was set to rights again. ‘ The Iron mooring posts which are on the wharf at present have been held by several competent persons to be untrustworthy when any great strain was placed upon them, In consequence of the Insecure manner in which they are made fast, and as an Instance that such Is the case, it may be mentioned that dating the height of tho gale yesterday morning the ship Leucadla,, which was berthed at the ieeeward of the wharf, tore one of them nearly completely up, and so loosened another that it will take very little to pull it away altogether, lb Is high time now that some reliable mooring-piles were placed on the wharf, so that vessels can lie alongside securely and without fCar of eveiy moment breaking adrift, as Is the case at present. 1
