(PEIt PRESS AGENCY.) Taobanga, Sunday. Captain Morris, M.H.R., addressed the electors last night. He defended the Atkinson Government. No questions were asked. A vote of confidence in him was passed. The Bay of Plenty Times urges the desirability of Sir John Goode inspecting Tauranga harbor, on his way from Napier to Auckland, at the end of the month. His opinion about the method of deepauing tho narrows would be invaluable, and though perhaps the funds necessary for acting thereon are not now forthcoming, so eminent an opinion should be placed on record. The Times reminds the Government that Tauranga is the only harbor between Auckland and Wellington. Nelson, Saturday. Messrs. Sharp and Pickering report the sale of Bearoroft, consisting of 190 acres, the property of tho late Sir David Munro, in Waimea West, for £2440. The property would have been more valuable but for tho encroachment of the Waimea River. Ohkistchoboh, Sunday. There are nineteen entries for the Birthday Stakes at the Canterbury Coursing Club’s meeting. St. George, own brother to Chester,'was brought through from Lyttelton on Saturday, and interviewed by a large number of persons, who were unanimous as to the very promising appearance of the colt. St. George is to be taken to the Middle Park Company’s farm in the afternoon. Balclctha, Sunday. At a meeting of the Clutha Agricultural and Pastoral Society it was resolved to petition the Governor to incorporate the society under the Act of last session. Tapandi, Saturday. ... A fire occurred yesterday morning at Mr. B. Elliot’s, Inglewood. The farm and stables were totally destroyed, and two valuable draught mares burnt to cinders. The harness and other property also were destroyed. The loss is partly covered by insurance in the Victoria office. Lawbenoe, Saturday, A long and important meeting of the County Council was held yesterday, concluding at II o’clock at night, A resolution was carried affirming the advisability of amalgamating the Browns, Clarks, Waitahuna, and Waipore ridings, so as to dispense with- one riding and one member. The object in view is to secure another riding for the up-country district, mid to obtain additional representation. , > It is rumored here that a payable quartz reef has been struck on the Lammerlaw Ranges. The prospects are goad, gold, being visible to the naked eye. In all probability the Council will purchase the Beaumont Bridge, A committee has been appointed to report upon the best means to be devised for purchasing. Were this done, the traffic would be free on the main interior roads for between 200 and 300 miles.
