KARORI-MAKARA HIGHWAY BOARD.

The nomination of candidates for the seat at the above Board vacant by the resignation of Mr. J. F. E. Wright, took place at noon yesterday at the woolshed, Goathurst Farm. Punctually at the hour named Mr. E. Brandon read the advertisement containing the election notice, and called upon any qualified elector to nominate a candidate. Mr. Charles Moody stepped forward and nominated himself. Mr. John Smith seconded the nomination. Mr. J. Symonds nominated Mr. Finnimore. Mr. A. Fiiohett seconded the nomination. ‘ The Returning Officer then called for a show of hands, when 3 were held up for Mr. Finnimore and 2 for Mr. Moody. Mr. Moody demanded a poll. The Returning Officer said he was in some doubt whether it was legal for an ■ elector to nominate himself, but upon this point he would take a lawyer's opinion. Mr. Moody said he was not aware of anything to prevent an elector nominating himself. It had been done before ; but if it was held to be illegal for him to nominate himself, he would withdraw. The Returning Officer said it the nomination of Mr. Moody were legal the poll could he taken on the 13th instant, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. If the nomination of Mr. Moody was illegal, Mr. Finnimore would be declared duly elected. This terminated the proceedings, which occupied only a few minutes. There were not above seven or eight persons present, including two representatives of the Press, the latter being drawn to the scene in expectation of speeches from Mr. Finnimore and Mr. Moody, which, however, were not delivered.

It was intended, we understand, to have nominated Mr. Compton, but on reference to the roll it appeared that his name was not on it, although that of his wife was. One or two gentlemen interested in Kilbirnie property were expected to have been present, who, however, did not put in an appearance. [A notice signed by the Returning Officer appears in our advertising columns stating that the poll will be taken on Monday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., and that the candidates are Mr. Charles Moody and Mr. William Finnimore],
