, In England they are adopting a horseshoe made of cow-hide, and known as the Yates shoe. It is composed of three thicknesses of bow-hide compressed in a steel mould, then subjected to a i chemical preparation. It 19 claimed for it that it lasts longer and weighs only one-fourth as milch - as the common: iron shoe; that it will never cause the hoof to split, nor have the least injurious influence on the foot. Locally the "excitement, or perhaps more correctly mania, over the prospect of gold at the Longwood, appears to bo on the increase (says the Southland News). Though some shake their heads and counsel caution, there are not wanting others who have not merely strong hopes of the district, but soripturally “show their* faith by their works.” One of these, a local gentleman, has done so to the extent of, it is said, taking no fewer than twenty : thousand shares, at one pound each, in . one of . 1 the already-projected companies. In Riverton, as may be 1 supposed, there is no less stir. A well known hotelkeeper there is reported to have shown his prudence by taking advantage of the excitement, to sell out to an Invercargill merchant for the tidy figure of £2500. As tho purchaser has the reputation of being a “ keen one for business,” and usually has “ bis Weather eye open,” the circumstance may be of some value.
