THE CENSUS.
The result of the census of the colony recently taken shows that its population has greatly increased within the past few years. Wellington, as has been stated in a former issue, has about doubled its population the last four years, and several other principal towns have also largely increased in size and importance. The whole of the returns .are not. yet before us ; but the-ffollowing .which are to hand show, as far as a satisfactory and progressive state of affairs,: — Thp returns for the city and suburbs of Auckland iire as follows Auckland Borough, City East, 4262 ; City West, 9470 shipping, 833. Total population within borough boundaries and shipping :—Males, 7737 ; females, 6828 ; total. 14,565. Suburbs—Parnell, Newmarket, and Kemuora, 4033 ; Grafton, 4754 ; Newton, 3512 ; Epsom, 1698. Total for city and suburbs—Males, 14,936 ; females, 14,226. Grand - total, 21,162. Onehunga Borough, 2143.' 'The increase in Auckland and suburbs, compared with the census of 1874, is 4052, The returns from Grahamstown show that the borough population is 2880 males, 2575 females. Thames County population, 4960; Piako County, 447; total population of the Thames District, 10,423. lu 1874, including Coromandel, the population was 12,272. The •Ooromandel returns are not yet completed. The Tauranga returns show the population to bo 2944; Tho agricultural returns are as follows :—Acres under grass and crops, 17,620. Over 9000 bushels wheat tyere ground at Tauranga this season. Tho census returns.give.Blenheim 373 males and 817 females. In 1874 the population was 494 males and 441 females ; increase,. 757. Pioton in 1874—Males 393, females 339; now, 351 males and 857 females; decrease 24. Province—6l4s in 1874; h0w,,7652. The returns 1 for the city of Nelson show—Males, 3380 ; females, . 3482 ; , total, 6862. In 1874 tho total was 5860. i Tho' population of Taranaki County is 7375, having nearly doubled itself in
four years. The population of the town of Now Plymouth is 2680, being an increase of 640 in .four years.- Grey and Bell'Distriot four years ago had 1808 souls in it, the census; returns'now show 3807. There are 1550 houses itf the county, showing an increase of 516, and Now Plymouth 599, showing an increase of 105. ! The returns for the, Christchurch muni-' cipality, in 1874, showed : —Males 5330, females 4964* ; total, 10,294. In 1878, males 6884, females6slß total, 13,402. AtTimaru the census of 1878 shows a-total of 4968. The census for the district between Taieri and Waikouaiti counties, with the exception of Oaversham and the Waikari and Kaikorai ridings, shows a total population of 43,668, 20,856 being females. The census in 1874 gave a total population of 39,503, showing, an approximate increase of 5497. In 1872 the total was 31,371. The following approximate results of the census have been obtained :—Population of Invercargill : 1844 males, 1787 females; total, 3631. Bast Invercargill ; 302 males, 318 females ; total, 620. North Invercargill : 214 males, 194 females ; total, 408. South Invercargill : 273 males, 255 females ; total, 528. Avenel : 132 males, 159 females ; total, 311. Gladstone : 105 males, 122 females ; total, 227. The total population of Invercargill and suburbs is therefore 5725. , The returns for Dunedin and the suburban municipalities are now completed as follows : Population of Dunedin—Males, 11,605; females, 10,888; total, 22,403. Koslyn —Males, 766 ; females, 803 ; total, 1569. Morningtou Males, 1098; females, 1149 ; total, 2207. Maori Hill —Males, 186; females, 157; total, 343. St. Hilda and South Dunedin —Males, 1084; females, 1229; total, 2313. Oaversham—Males, 1780; females, 1662; total, 3442.
The following returns have also been received :—Clutha (portion only)—6B males, 49 females. Riverton—237s males, 1819 females. Wallace—l 740 t males, 720 females. Waikaka—l37l males, 701 females. Mataura —4190 males, 3381 females. Invercargill--1912 males, 1841 females. The gross total population of the five electoral districts is 20,167, and the total number of dwellings, 4390. '
The population of towns on the West Coast is as follows Hokitika, 3244 ; Grey mouth, 2934 ; Kumara, 1275 ; Ross, 1068. The returns of the population of country districts in the Westland and Grey counties have not yet been, completed. The population of Westland County is 11,653 ; Grey County, 7772.
