The Kaitoke and Kiwitea sections were withdrawn for special sale, there being no Aids.
The sale throughout was exceedingly successful, and the prices realised show that land in Wellington has by no means reached its maximum price, and there is yet room for fair and honest speculation. MESSRS. J. 11. BETHUNE AND CO. A large and important land sale was held on April 3rd by Messrs. Bethunc & Co. at their mart, Featherston-Street. There was a large attendance, and the bidding for some of the properties was very spirited. Some of the lots however were "withdrawn, as there were no suitable offers made. After the sale several town sections situated at Masterton were disposed of at satisfactory prices. Mr. M. 11. Miller reports the sole on the 13th April of Allan McDonald’s Pouawa property, at Gisborne, containing 19,200 acres, leasehold, at a rental of £IOO per annum, having 10 years to run, and 112 acres freehold, with all improvements and 11,t) 00 sheep, to Mr. Doull, of Mataura, Otago, for £IO,OOO sterling. The Ahauriri Estate, the property of Richard Fleming, situated on the Peninsula, fifteen miles from Christchurch, was sold by auction on April 12th. It comprises 1107 acres, and realised £31,500. It was sold in blocks of various sizes. The price per acre ranged from £6 10». to £2O.
Wo understand that Mr. P. A. Buckley has purchased, through Messrs, Bethuue and Hunter, the. property known as the Lyells Bay Station, belonging to the estate of the late Mr. Alexander Sutherland, containing 500 acres freehold land, being sections Nos. 1,2, 3,4, and 0, each 100 acres. The exact pricegivenhas not transpired.
A largo number of applications were made at the Survey Office, Lawrence, Otago, on Monday, April 15th, for land under agricultural leases in Tuapeka West, Table Hill, and Waitahuua East districts. There were also a number of applications for land under the deferred payment ejstem in the same neighborhood. Throughout the whole of the day the office was fairly besieged with applicants.
At Mr. Duncan’s land sale on April 16, lot 1, Hospital reserve, 0a 2r sp, was knocked down to Mr G. Y. Shannon at a rental of £35 per annum, and all the other lots were withdrawn. A piece of land at the corner of Courtenayplaco and Tory-street was placed at an annual rental of 15s per foot, and a piece having a frontage of 10ft to Tory-street brought a rental of 35s per . foot. The Greytown and Kilbiruie properties were withdrawn, and there was not a bid for properties offered at Feilding and Pahautauui. Mr. Miller sold Henry Ford’s Whana leasehold property, about thirty miles from Napier, 18,GOO acres, rout £2OO, eleven years unexpired, 12,000 mixed sheep, and station plant, to Mr. R. E. Beamish, for £13,500; and Ford’s Kereru freehold, 11,150 acres, plant, and 10,000 sheep, to Messrs. J. and A. Harding, for £28,500.
Mr. J. J. Tyo reports that the total number of acres of the Arlington estate sold on March 30th was 9-15(3, which realized £42,500, or on an average a little over £4 10s. per acre, including the township, the suburban sections, and the rural laud. The township of Wanstcad included 33 acres, which brought £1216, or £37 3s. per aero ; the suburban sections, 43 acres, £304 ; and the rural lands, 9380 acres, £40,990, or au average of about £4 7s. 3d. per acre. Many of the lots have been changing hands since the sale at higher figures. The sale of Arlington Estate, Napier, the property of Captain Newman, was concluded on March 30. It was held in the Theatre, and occupied two days. The attendauco'each day was very large, and for some lots tho bidding was very spirited. Tho sale comprised the township of Wamstead, the sections being about a rood each. The township realised over £12,000. The suburban sections ranged from £lB to £6 per aero. On March 30th the sale consisted of small farm settlements, on deferred payments, and realised from £B, to £3 10s. These rural blocks realised about £45,000, It is a.vory ordinary run of country, and tho satisfactory prices obtained surprised a good many. There is talk of constructing a tramway, which will enable three largo runs to bo brought into tho market for small farms. Henry Driver sold to Mr. J. F. Hatching, of Moa Iff at, tho Horseshoe Bush estate at Waihola, 2000 acres, at £lO per aero. Mr. Hitching iutcuds to convert it into a model stud farm for shorthorn cattle and Clydesdale horses.
Mr. J. H. Wallace sold on Wednesday by auction allotment 6 of section 245 in the city of Wellington, having a frontage to Hill-street of 30 ft. 3iu. by a depth of ilSft. Mr 11. Archibald’was tho purchaser of tlio property at £loloa per foot.
