The steamer is to be constructed in Wellington, of timber, bv the well-known shipwrights Messrs. Coffey ansi Dixon. Mr. Edward Seagar, of the Victoria Foundry, has the work of constructing them, and he will no doubt turn them out in a first-class manner. SHIPPING SUMMARY. Since the publication of our last summary for Home very little to chronicle in shipping matters ha* taken place, the present season of the year being gem-rally a slack one, corning as it does at the end of the wool season, and when the arrivals from foreign ports are very few. However, although the arrivals during the past month from Home must bo set down as nil, our trade with the other coastal ports and neighboring colonies has exhibited an unusual activity, and so great has been the influx of arrivals that the wharf lias on many occasions been largely overcrowded. However, the want of proper accommodation for the shipping here will very shortly be remedied, as the contractors for extending the wharf arc pushing on the work most energetically, and in a few months the whole of it will be completed. IMMIOII ATT OS AND KMKJ RATION. Tho approximate arrivals and departures of passengers by sea at tho port of Wellington during the present month are as follows Arrivals: Males, PSU ; females, 241 : children, 57—total, 1200. Departures : Males, 187 ; females, GJ ; children, 18total, 2JB.

The departures for foreign ports dnring the present month have comprised two vessels, viz., the River Leven on the sth April, and Lanarkshire on the 22nd, both in ballast, for San Francisco. They discharged full cargoes hero from Horae in good condition, as Mho have the Benvcnue and Lord of the Isles. The slfp “• iainsborougli i< still in port, having been delayed for n considerable time while a new iron bowsprit was being constructed for her. It is now finished, Jand will be shipped into her without delay. She will go hence to .San Francisco, and is anticipated to leave here on the 30th instant. The other Home ships now in port arc the Margaret Galbraith, Carnatic, and Itialto. The two latter are loading with wool, &0., for London, but as it is now the fag end of t Jig season they are but slowly filling up, The Carnatic will be ready to sail in the first week in May, and the Rialto not many days after her. The Margaret Galbraith v/ill follow the Rialto, but it will bo some considerable time before she will leave here. Of the vessels now duo in port , from London the Lcucadin ought to be first, being now 102 days out: and the Canraorc should not bo many days behind her. The barque Sophia R. Luhrs arrived at Dunedin from New York ou the oth in- 1., and is expected here 'shortly, Shelias 000 tons Yankee notions on board for this port. She is to be followed by the brig Star, which loft New York for here during February. INTERCOLONIAL. The Union Company's lirsfc-class fleet of steamers continue to perform the coastal service excellently both to the satisfaction of merchants and the travelling public. The Taupo, Hawea, and Wanaka are confined to the East Coast trade, while the Taranaki and Taiaroa, when they come to Wellington, go up the West Coast, making the Manukau their terminus. The steamers which go up the East Coast call at, the Bay of Islands, where they ship a large quantity of coal at a very cheap rate, and which is nearly sufficient to last them the whole trip round. The Wakatipu up communication regularly onco a month Sydney in conjunction with the Rotorua, the latter boat calling in at Auckland and Napier prior to arriving here. Messrs. McMockan, Blackwood, and Co’s, excellent lino of steamers, running between Melbourne, ilobnvton, and New Zealand, perform the service rapidly and elliclehtly. The large steamer Easby plies regularly between Sydney, Newcastle, this, and the Southern porta of the colony, and commands large cargoes aad a fair number of passengers. STATiaTIO.9.
