RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Monday, April 22. (Before T. C. Crawford, Esq., E.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Margaret Farrell and Charles Grotziui were each fined 55., or in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, for being drunk and disorderly in the public streets. A TRDiIPERT CASE. Robert Dick, a respectable looking man, was charged on the information of William Barnett with stealing a key of the value of is. From the evidence- of Barnett, it appeared that the accused went into the Arcade on Saturday night and asked’the price of a toy train that was put in motion by clockwork. Accused said he would purchase it, but according to witness’s statement never paid the money, and walked out of the Arcade with the key which wound up the spring of the train. Witness then followed accused up the street and gave him in charge. .The accused in defence stated that he asked the price, of the toy, and was told by witness that it was 9s. He (accused) then gave witness three half-crowns and a two shilling piece, and received sixpence in change. He told witness to wrap the train up in paper, but that be would carry the key in his pocket. Iu answer to the Bench, Sergeant Smith said that the accused was known to be a very respectable man. His Worship dismissed the case, and remarked that it was one which should be settled civilly and not criminally. The Court then adjourned.
