THIS DAY’S AMUSEMENTS.

Holiday-makers will have a fair choice as to the manner in which they will amuse themselves to-day. The chief attraction will be the sports given by the Amateur Athletic Club at the Basin Reserve. The prizes offered are liberal, some of them consisting of handsome cups, and the entries made give promise of good sport. Considerable interest is felt among the athletes to see how some men new to Wellington will acquit themselves. The club has done capital work in promoting legitimate athletic sports, and they deserve to be well patronised. Should the weather be as fine as it has been of late it may be expected that there will be, a very large attendance. The committee, as' a rule, manage matters well, and it has been arranged to start all events punctually, so that time will not be wasted, and people will not be kept waiting without anything to amuse them. The Jane Douglas and Moa will start on fishing excursions, and both shonld have a fair complement of pleasure-seekers. The cadets meet at the rifle range at 8 o’clock to fire against the Nelson cadets. Some cricket matches have been arranged, and at the Hutt there will be special attractions. Arrangements have been made by the railway department to run excursion trains at low rates, and no doubt a large number of passengers will be carried. In the evening “ Forsaken ’’ will be repeated at the Theatre Royal, and the Opera Concert Company will appear at the Odd Fellows’ Hall. The company include several old favorites, and they are sure to have a good house.
