(EBB PEESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Thursday. Te Wheoro is in town interviewing Mr. Sheehan respecting the approaching native meeting. Tawhiao is still ill. A new Native Lands Act will be introduced by Government next session. The Bill passed last session has enabled the Government to ascertain their position respecting land purchases. They find that Government will lose largely on the blocks which have been acquired, and in some cases will lose 15s. in the £. The new Act will appoint native assessors to investigate all titles. Having settled the ownership, they will call in a European Judge, who will register their decisions. Then the land will from time to time be put up in small blocks not exceeding one thousand acres. Provision is made in the Act to prevent the acquirement of large blocks by monopolists. The Government will probably abandon ; a large amount of unprofitable speculations ■ entered into by their predecessors. , A fire this morning destroyed Cotter’s cabinet-maker’s shop in High-street. The loss is estimated at £2OO. The property is not insured. After some discussion the City Council have agreed to invite tenders for the city bank account for three years. Gbeyjiouth, Thursday. _ New quartz reefs have been discovered in both the Moonlight and Blackball Districts. Several claims have been applied for. The stone shows good gold. Nelson, Thursday. Sir George Grey addressed a crowded meeting at the Provincial Hall last night, when the substance of , his speech was the same as delivered at Wellington and elsewhere. At the close of the meeting a vote of confidence was proposed and carried nem. con,, amidst most enthusiastic and prolonged cheering. Chbibtchobch, Thursday. The entries for the Dog Show number 300. They include dogs from Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, and Nelson. The Marble Company, having found extensive reefs of splendid marble in their quarry, have issued a prospectus for increasing their capital to £IO,OOO, _ Longlands is now a strong favorite at 3 to 1 for the Autumn Handicap. Bide-a-wee stands at 6to 1 ; Templeton, 5. to 1 ; Ariel, 6to 1 ; Maritani, Bto 1. Tim ABU, Thursday, A man named William Somers, employed as a baker at Pleasant Point, was burnt to death last night. He set a batch of bread at 8 p.m. and went to bed- The bakery, .which is a detached building, was found on fire, and was burnt to the ground. The charred remains of Somers were found, but no clue to the cause of the fire. : INTEBCABSILL, Thursday. The immigration officer sends nominations tins month for 67 people, being the largest number for some tune back.
