CRICKET.—NELSON V. WELLINGTON.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —As many remarks were made both on and off the ground yesterday, and again today, upon the fact that X was not acting as umpire for the Wellington team, as heretofore, I wish to state that my sole reason for declining the office was physical inability. An umpire has to stand on the ground all through a match, he cannot take the intervals of rest that the players have, and as I was playing in the Wellington eleven of theperiod in the year 1848, 1 think I may now be allowed to plead for a respite. Under ordinary circumstances it would not be necessary thus to Advertise my retirement ; but having been so often complimented (much., more i than X deserve) for my endeavors to promote cricket in Wellington, and notably in 1871, when I was publicly presented with, handsome testimonials by the Mayor of this city.,it might seem ungrateful if I did hot thus express to the' cricketers of Wellington, through your columns, my regret at, being , compelled to. decline an office that I have , for, so' many years been proud to.hold, and also my. thanks for the confidence they have so long reposed iu me, 1 have, &c., W. Bromley, Wellington, April 15.
