In reference to the appointment of the Duke of Northumberland as Lord Privy Seal the European Mail says:—We do not know, nobody, we believe, does know, what are the uses oi a Lord Privy Seal, but doubtless, like the Lord Chancellor, he carries a hag, only of smaller dimensions. When the late Marquis of Olanrioarde was appointed, in 1858, it was generally admitted that a Lord Privy Seal could b dispensed with even more easily than a Chancellor of theDneliy of Lancaster, whose duties Lord Beaoonsfield once inferred to be the exercise of some supervision over the tolltakers of Waterloo Bridge, However, the Duke of Northumberland, the lord of a thousand hills, is now Lord Privy Seal in succession to Lord Beaoonsfield, to whom it has just occurred that he should not be a pluralist. The Duke, when he was Lord Lovaine, was a Lord of the Admiralty in the second Derby Government. As the Duke is one of the wealthiest peers, with a rent-roll that is the envy of princes, we suppose that the appointment is an honorary one, and that the country will not be saddled with a salary by the abolition of a plural holding. The European Mail of the 15th February records the death, on February 2, at Grange-over-Sands, of Annie, the beloved wife of Bichard A. Taylor, of Gomersall, and daughter of W. Warring Taylor, of Wellington, New Zealand, aged 23. “ Anglo-Australian,” in the European Mail of February 15, says :—The news from Buenos Ayres is to the effect that the wool-growers have never had a more prosperous season, and this is supplemented by the" announcement that a very large quantity of the wool on offer is being bought for the French markets, and that much less is going to Antwerp than in former years. Looking to the fact that the means of transit from Buenos Ayres to the French ports are many and frequent, and considering that the French have, as a rule, been very large buyers in the London market, there is just enough in this announcement to set one inquiring whether the Biver Plate wool has reached a stage at which it can enter into competition with some sorts of Australian. The Duke of Connaught has been installed Great Prior of Ireland, in the room of the late Marquis Oonyngham. The ceremony took place at the Masonic Hall, Dublin, in the presence of a large assembly of the brethren representing the city and provincial preceptories of the Great Priory of Ireland. Amongst those taking a prominent part in the proceedings were Viscount Powersconrt, the Earl of Huntingdon, and Captain Hawes, Grand A.D.G, of England. Jonah in the whale’s belly was safer than those who, being swallowed upof sickness and disease, yet neglect to take the only remedies that can save them.
