NEW PLYMOUTH RACES.
. New Plymouth, Tuesday. The weather was fine for the Taranaki races. Maiden Plate, of 10 sovs. Distance, one mile and a half.—Redeemer, 1 ; Gazelle, 2 ; Charity Girl, 3; Emblem, 4. Te Tewaka, Gang Forward, Bourbaki, Speculation, and Confident also ran. Cornet was scratched. Bourbakibolted across the course, throwing his jockey. After two false starts, the horses got r.way, Redeemer and Gazelle leading, Te Tewaka and Charity Girl in close attendance. They passed the stand the first time in a cluster. Gazelle ran into first place on ascending the hill, and was joined by Redeemer, Emblem, and Charity Girl. A close and exciting race home resulted in a victory for Reedemer by a short head.
Cup, of 60 sovs. Distance, two miles.— Resolution, 9st. 41b., 1 ; Queen of the Vale, Sst. 21b., 2 ; Luna, Bst,, 3. The Queen made the running at first, with Resolution second. Luna joined the latter near the grand-stand, but was outpaced, the leading pair keeping the same position. About 100 yards from home the Queen made an effort, but failed, Resolution winning, hard held, by a length. Time, Smin. Isec. Betting, 3to 1 on Resolution. Jockey Club Handicap, of 150 sovs.; second horse to receive 10 sovs. Distance, two miles. —Otawa (including 7lb. extra), 7st. 31b., 1 ; Resolution (including 101 b. extra), 9st. Sib., 2; Uira, 7st., 3 ; Tamatea, Sst., 4 ; Flora McDonald, Sst., 5. Betting : 6 to 4 agst Resolution ; 2 to 1 agst Otawa ; 3 to 1 agst Flora McDonald ; 5 to 1 agst Uira. Punctually to time the horses assembled at the post, and at the first attempt the starter (despatched the lot on even terms. Otawa, 1 running outside, forced the pace, and showed into the straight with a good lead. Flora McDonald and Resolution were next the rails, in the order named, till going down the far side of the course the first time, when Resolution ran into second place, Flora McDonald falling back, and Uira taking her place. No alteration of any moment occurred for a complete round of the course, Otawa, still running well, continuing to hold his own. On climbing the hill for the last time, Kraft called upon Resolution, who gamely responded ; but the weight told, and he could not come within a length of Otawa, who won a fast run race by a length and a half ; Uira third, about two lengths behind Resolution. Time, 3min. SOsec. Champagne Stakes, of 40 sovs. Distance, six furlongs.—Gladys, Sst. 81b., 1 ; Snowstorm, Sst. 81b., 2 ; Chanticleer, Sst. 81b., 3 ; Redeemer, Sst. 101 b., 4; Queen of the Forest, Bst. 81b., 5; Bourbaki, Sst. 101 b., 6. Betting : Even on Gladys, 2 to 1 agst Chanticleer, 3 to 1 agst Snowstorm. The two-year-olds were despatched at the first attempt to a capital start. The favorite at once rushed to the front, hotly pursued by Snowstorm and; Chanticleer. She made all the running, and won rather easily at the finish by a length from Snowstorm. Chanticleer was beaten by a length and a half for second place.
