BLUFF, Wednesday. The Tararua left Melbourne on the 20th, called at flobarton, and arrived at the Bluff this morning. Experienced line weather throughout. She brings 20 saloon and 22 steerage passengers and 370 tons cargo for all ports. She sails at 4 p.m. for Dunedin. Passengers for Wellington—Miss Derraett, Mr. Meredith ; 3 steerage ; 20 tons cargo. PORT CHALMERS, Wednesday. Sailed: Albion Company's ship Canterbury, for London, with 10 passengers and the following cargo ; —2BBI bales wool, 400 casks tallow, 3837 sacks flour, and 4277 sacks wheat, valued at £06,162. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Arrived : Stella, from Lyttelton. Sailed : Onwaid, schooner, for Lyttelton, via the Thames. The s.s. Wellington left Nelson at 12,80 pm. on the 26th. and arrived at Picton at 9.15 p.m; left again at 12.16, and arrived in harbor at (5.30 a.m. yesterday morning. She sailed for Picton and Nelson last night. The s.s. Tanpo. from Southern ports, arrived here yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with a large cargo and a heavy passenger list. She left Port Chalmers at 2 p.m. on the 25th, called at Akarna, and 'arrived at Lyttelton at 1 p.m. on the 20th; left at 9 p.m., and arrived in harbor as above stated. The Taupo will sail for Auckland, via the East Coast, to-day at noon, The s.s. Albion sailed for Melbourne and Hobarton, via the South, at 5.30 p.m, yesterday. The s.s. Kiwi arrived here from Napier and East Coast po»ts at 4 o’clock yesterday .afternoon. She left Napier at 11 a m. on Monday last, went to Pourere and shipped tallow, thence proceeded to Castlepoint, where several passengers were taken on board : from there went to Waitaranga: where wool was shipped and cargo landed. From Waitaranga came on to this port, and arrived h- re as above stated. The Kiwi wi ll . sail for Castlepoint and Napier t -day. The Army and Xricy Gazette says:—“The th ee Japanese ironclads which have been built under the .superintendence of Mr. E. J. Reed, M.P., C. 8., are about to proceed to Japan, where they will form a very powerful squadron. The ships are not only beautilully fitted, but perfect in construction. Speed, economy of fuel, a very heavy armament, and the -fact of their being safe ocean cruisers, have been fully realised. The two corvettes are about 221 ft. long, 41ft. beam, and 1700 tons, with a displacement of 2216 tons. They draw r very little water, and require with their heavy armament but some 220 men. The quantity of coal supplied is sufficient for many days* steaming, and they have great sail power. The larger vessel, now lying at Alillwall, is fitted with twin screws, is 220 ft. long; 48ft. beam, and is about 2340 tons. Her draught of water loaded is scarcely 18ft." AN INNOVATION IN SHIP JUGGING. Captain Patten, of the coasting barque Penang (-ays the San Francisco Post), has on exhibition, at the Merchants'Exchange, the model of a ship which he lias just named the Innovation. There is no bowsprit proper, only the jibboom, and situated where the heel of the bowsprit should come is a kind of jiggerraast, carrying a fore-and-aft leg-of-mutton cut sail, to which the stays un. The foremast is stepped In its regular position. The special features arc that the yards are all double, and can be lowered on to the caps in case it becomes necessary to take in sail suddenly. The fore course is triangular, dispensing entirely with clew-lines. Between the fore and main masts two jiggermasts, one on each Hide.-, carrying,.leg-of-mutton sails set square, aro stepped. In the absence of any explanation, it is presumed that those sails are to be when the vessel is running before the wind with the mainsail off, or when she is carrying little or ho saiL The mainmast is similar to the foremast. Between the main and mizzen masts another jiggermast is stepped, carrying three leg-of-mutton sails, which take the place of the staysails. This, to the nautical reporter, appeared to be the most valuable innovation, as every sailor must of course be familiar with the way in which the ordinary staysails take the wind out of the topsails. The mizzenmast is barque-rigged, but carries fixed yards through which -the main braces are rove. A great advantage offered by the new system of rigging and sparring ships, if found successful, will be the small amount of running rigging required, the extent to which * ‘ slatting” of sails will bo prevented, and the saving of labor on the part of tho seamen. Sails on tho new model ship should last a few years longer, freed from such a quantity of ordinary running gear.
